Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Trembles

By the time I finished giving my statement to the police, the sun was beginning to rise over Ohio. Carter and Beatrice had been taken down to the precinct for formal questioning regarding criminal coercion and attempted insurance fraud. Amber, due to her pregnancy, was kept under police guard in a private hospital room while her minor injuries were treated.

I walked out of the hospital into the cool morning air, feeling a profound sense of freedom I hadn't felt in seven years.

For nearly a decade, I had played the quiet, supportive wife to Carter Mercer. I had endured his mother's subtle insults about my inability to conceive, and I had quietly tolerated Carter's increasingly cold behavior. I had blamed myself, thinking that if I could just be a better wife, a more successful partner, our marriage would heal.

But seeing that Facebook post last night—seeing him hold Amber’s stomach with the same smile he used to give me—had shattered the illusion. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. My background as a senior corporate compliance officer kicked in. I didn't get mad; I got organized.

My phone rang. It was Marcus, my older brother and a partner at one of the top forensic accounting firms in the state.

"Evelyn, I saw the social media posts," Marcus said, his voice laced with pure fury. "Are you okay? Where are you?"

"I'm outside Mercy General, Marcus. I'm perfectly fine. In fact, I've never been better," I replied, walking toward a waiting rideshare vehicle. "Did you manage to pull the files I asked for?"

"I did," Marcus said, his tone shifting to one of professional admiration. "And boy, did you open a can of worms. Carter hasn't just been cheating on you, Ev. He’s been using your personal identity and your grandfather’s trust fund as collateral for a massive real estate scam. He’s underwater by nearly three million dollars. That luxury car he gave to his mistress? He tried to report it stolen twice last month to get the insurance payout, but the claims were denied."

A cold laugh escaped my throat. "So that's why they were so desperate for me to take the blame for the crash. If Amber was driving a car she wasn't authorized to have, the insurance would completely void the policy, and the victim in the other vehicle—who is currently in serious condition—would sue Carter directly, exposing his bankruptcy."

"Exactly," Marcus confirmed. "But it gets worse for them. Beatrice’s beloved charity, 'The Mercer Foundation for Maternal Health'? It’s a total sham. She’s been using the donations to pay off Carter’s gambling debts in Atlantic City. I have the bank routing numbers right here."

"Keep those files secure, Marcus," I said, looking out the window as the car drove past the beautiful suburban neighborhood where the Mercers lived their fake, perfect life. "I’m heading to the house right now to pack my things. By the time Carter gets out on bail, he won't have a wife, a fortune, or a reputation left."

"Be careful, Ev. A cornered animal is dangerous."

"Don't worry," I whispered. "I’m the one setting the traps now."
