Chapter 4 - The Public Unraveling

Within forty-eight hours, the Mercer family scandal became the top trending topic on local social media. The Facebook post Amber had so arrogantly uploaded became the ultimate evidence against her. Netizens tracked down her previous posts, revealing a timeline of her bragging about sleeping with a married man and driving a luxury car that "the sterile ex-wife couldn't keep."
The public backlash was brutal. Beatrice’s charity website was flooded with demands for financial audits. The donors, terrified of being associated with a family accused of insurance fraud and criminal coercion, publicly withdrew their support.
I sat in my brother Marcus’s office, watching a live news broadcast outside the local courthouse.
"The Mercer Group shares have plunged by forty percent this morning," the reporter announced. "Following the arrest of CEO Carter Mercer on charges of grand theft, bank fraud, and conspiracy, federal investigators have officially stepped in to audit the family's financial assets."
Marcus placed a cup of tea in front of me, smiling proudly. "You did it, Ev. You completely dismantled them in less than three days."
"It's not over yet," I said, staring at the television screen. "Carter is desperate. A man like him won't just accept defeat. He’s going to try to play the victim card at the preliminary hearing tomorrow."
"Let him try," Marcus laughed. "With the forensic evidence we submitted to the District Attorney, his defense team doesn't have a leg to stand on. They’re already trying to cut a deal for Amber to testify against Carter in exchange for a lighter sentence."
My phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. I hesitated for a moment before pressing answer.
"Evelyn... please," a weak, breaking voice sobbed through the line. It was Amber.
"How did you get this number, Amber?" I asked coldly.
"Carter abandoned me," she wept openly, the theatricality completely gone, replaced by raw, genuine terror. "The moment the federal investigators froze his accounts, he blamed me for everything. He told his lawyers to claim that I stole your car keys without his knowledge! He’s trying to put all the criminal charges on me! I’m eight months pregnant, Evelyn. Please... I know I was awful to you, but please don't let him ruin my baby's life!"
I listened to her cry, feeling a strange mix of pity and vindication. Carter was exactly who I knew he was—a coward who would throw anyone under the bus to save his own skin, even the woman carrying his child.
"Amber," I said, my voice steady and firm. "I am not your savior. You chose to participate in his lies, and you chose to mock my pain publicly. But if you want to save yourself from a lengthy prison sentence, you have one option. You go to the District Attorney, you hand over every text message, every email, and every promise Carter made to you about my assets. You give them the truth."

"I will! I will do anything!" she gasped.
"Good. Because tomorrow morning, the final curtain falls."
