Chapter 1 - The Trap Snares the Hunters

The hospital corridor fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The dispatcher’s voice bled through my phone speaker, clear and professional, contrasting sharply with the chaotic malice of the Mercer family.

Carter took a clumsy step toward me, his hands outstretched, his face shifting from smug arrogance to sheer panic. "Evelyn, hang up the phone right now! Have you lost your mind? We are talking about my child! Your family's future!"

"Ma'am? I am dispatching officers to Mercy General right now," the voice on the phone confirmed. "Please remain in a safe, public area. Do not engage with the suspects."

"I am standing right by the main triage desk, surrounded by hospital security," I replied smoothly, looking directly into my mother-in-law’s bulging eyes. "I am completely safe. The suspects are right here."

I clicked the phone shut.

Beatrice let go of my arm as if she had been burned. Her aristocratic composure completely shattered. "You ungrateful, barren viper! After everything this family has done for you? We gave you a roof over your head! We allowed you into our social circle! And you repay us by trying to put a pregnant girl in prison?"

"You didn't give me a roof, Beatrice," I said, my voice echoing off the sterile white walls. The passing nurse and the security guard were now openly watching us. "I bought that house with my inheritance. Carter’s name isn't even on the deed. And as for your social circle? It’s built on a mountain of unpaid debts and counterfeit designer bags. I know exactly how much money you’ve been skimming from the family charity."

Carter’s breath hitched. He looked at Amber, who had stopped her theatrical sobbing and was now staring at him with sudden terror.

"Evelyn, let's talk about this rationally," Carter pleaded, changing his tactic. He tried to drop his voice into that smooth, manipulative tone he used whenever he wanted to smooth over an argument. "Amber is young. She made a mistake. She didn't know the car was yours—"

"She knew," I interrupted, pulling up my tablet from my tote bag. "Because three hours ago, she posted a selfie inside my luxury sedan with the caption: 'Suck it, ex-wife. Out with the old, in with the new. Thanks, babe!' And she tagged you, Carter."

I turned the screen toward them. The post already had over two hundred likes. But right underneath it, I had already commented with a crystal-clear photo of the car’s registration document, clearly showing my name as the sole owner, alongside the time-stamped security footage from our driveway showing Carter handing her the keys without my permission.

"The internet moves fast, Carter," I smiled coldly. "But my lawyers move faster."

Before Carter could speak, the heavy glass doors of the emergency room slid open. Three police officers stepped inside, their boots clicking firmly against the polished tile.

The security guard pointed immediately at our group. "Officers, over here. We have a domestic dispute and a reported attempt at insurance fraud."

Carter tried to straighten his jacket, putting on his best corporate smile. "Officers, there’s been a massive misunderstanding. My wife is simply emotional right now—"

"Officers," I stepped forward, handing them my phone, which was already playing the crystal-clear audio recording of Beatrice calling me a 'worthless, hollow woman' and Carter ordering me to lie to the police. "My name is Evelyn Vance. I am the owner of the white Mercedes that was involved in the hit-and-run on Route 4. And these three individuals just attempted to coerce me into taking the blame for a criminal felony."

The lead officer listened to the recording for exactly ten seconds before looking up at Carter and Amber with disgust.

"Step away from the lady, sir," the officer commanded. "Ma'am, let's go somewhere quiet to take your official statement."
