Chapter 9 - Promises in the Garden

Spring arrived in New York City, blooming with vibrant colors and warm breezes. The private garden behind the Manhattan townhome was transformed into a paradise of rose bushes, blooming cherry blossoms, and green velvet lawns.
Alessandro sat on a garden bench, watching Sophia and Mia chase butterflies across the grass. Sophia was now walking confidently on her little legs, her laughter ringing out across the garden. Mia acted as her fierce protector, guiding her away from the stone steps and sharing her toys generously.
Elena walked out of the house carrying a tray of fresh lemonade. She sat beside Alessandro, placing a hand gently on his knee.
"You look peaceful," she said, smiling at him.
"I am," Alessandro replied, covering her hand with his own. "For the first time in my life, I don't look over my shoulder when I walk through a door."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. Elena’s breath caught in her throat.
"Alessandro..."
Alessandro turned to face her, taking her right hand in his. He opened the box, revealing a stunning, elegant ring featuring a rare pink diamond surrounded by platinum filigree—symbolizing new beginnings and enduring strength.
"Eleven months ago, I was a dead man walking, consumed by vengeance and grief," Alessandro said, his voice filled with deep, undeniable emotion. "You and Mia brought life back into my world. You taught me how to be a father again. You taught me how to love again."
He looked into her tear-filled eyes. "Elena Rossi, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me protect you, cherish you, and build a real family together?"
Elena wept openly, tears of pure joy flowing down her face. She threw her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply.
"Yes! Yes, Alessandro, a thousand times yes!" she cried out.
Over on the lawn, Mia stopped chasing butterflies and looked over at them. She grabbed Sophia’s hand and ran over to the bench.
"Mommy crying?" Mia asked, concerned, peering up at them.
Alessandro smiled, picking up both Mia and Sophia, holding them in his lap alongside Elena. "Mommy is happy, Mia. We’re all going to be a real family now."
Mia beamed, clapping her hands. "Does that mean Mr. Alex is my Daddy now?"
Alessandro felt a lump form in his throat. He looked at Mia, the little girl who had walked barefoot into a dark nursery to comfort a crying baby, changing all their destinies forever.

"Only if you want me to be, sweetheart," Alessandro whispered.
Mia wrapped her small arms tightly around his neck. "I want you to be my Daddy forever."
