Chapter 1 - Shadows on Long Island

The silence following the clip’s end felt heavier than the storm outside. Alessandro sat immobile in the dark vault, his breath ragged. He reopened the video, scrubbing back to 12:07 a.m., watching Mia Rossi’s tiny frame reach through the crib slats. A child, barely three years old, carrying a battered stuffed rabbit, had accomplished what a syndicate worth hundreds of millions could not: she had brought peace to his grieving daughter.
Alessandro’s mind raced through the implications. Elena Rossi was a quiet housekeeper who kept her head down, carrying her own invisible burdens of widowhood. But in a house monitored by former special ops guards, a three-year-old had slipped through security perimeters undetected. If a toddler could breach the nursery, so could an assassin. The realization sent a cold wave of adrenaline through his chest.
He summoned Marco, his head of security, through an encrypted internal line. Within two minutes, the towering, scarred lieutenant stood in the office. Alessandro flipped the laptop toward him without a word. Marco watched the playback, his stoic demeanor breaking as his eyes widened.
"Boss... the secondary hallway sensor was bypassed," Marco stammered, checking his tablet. "She squeezed through the old laundry chute access on the second floor. It was painted over years ago, but the latch was loose."
"Fix it," Alessandro commanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Not to keep her out—to make sure no one else uses it. And Marco? Increase the outer perimeter patrols. If the Falcone family gets wind that I have a vulnerability, they won't target me first. They'll target the nursery."
Marco nodded grimly and withdrew. Left alone, Alessandro stood up and walked down the dimly lit hallway toward Sophia’s room. He pushed the door open soundlessly. In the faint glow of the night-light, Sophia was sleeping soundly, one tiny hand clutching the one-eared rabbit Mia had left behind.
At 6:00 a.m., Elena Rossi was in the main kitchen, quiet as a shadow, preparing coffee. Alessandro entered, his tall, imposing presence causing her to drop a spoon. She immediately backed away, her eyes fixed on the floor, terrified she had made a mistake.
"Elena," Alessandro said smoothly, stepping closer. "Your daughter was in Sophia’s room last night."
Elena turned deathly pale. She dropped to her knees, her hands trembling violently. "Mr. Moretti, please! I’m so sorry! I lock our door, but Mia... she wanders when she hears a baby cry. Her father... he used to sing to her before he passed. Please don't fire us. We have nowhere to go."
Alessandro looked down at the terrified woman, feeling an unfamiliar tug of empathy. He reached out, offering a hand to help her up. "You're not fired, Elena. But starting today, your duties change. You will move into the suite adjacent to the nursery. Mia is allowed near Sophia. In fact, I am paying you double to ensure she stays."

Elena stared at him in disbelief, tears welling in her eyes. But before she could express her gratitude, the heavy oak front doors of the estate slammed open. Marco strode into the hallway, his face drained of color.
"Alessandro," Marco called out, pulling his firearm. "We have a problem at the front gate. A vehicle just blew through the outer security barrier. It’s an unmarked black SUV."
