Chapter 4 - The Breach at Catskill

Alessandro’s warm smile vanished instantly, replaced by the stone-cold mask of a mafia capo. He stood up, handing Sophia to Elena.

"Bunker. Now," he ordered, his voice commanding and absolute. "Marco, engage thermal perimeter defenses. Do not let them reach the tree line."

Elena grabbed both children and ran toward the concealed steel door in the hallway. Alessandro followed, securing the heavy door behind them and setting the electronic seal. Inside the bunker, monitors displayed live feeds of the mountain surrounding the lodge.

Through the infrared cameras, Alessandro watched as over a dozen armed men dressed in winter camo advanced through the snow. Leading them was a tall, gaunt figure wearing a heavy fur coat—Victor Falcone.

"He came himself," Alessandro muttered, staring at the screen.

"Alessandro," Elena whispered, holding the girls tight in the corner. "What do they want?"

"They want to eliminate me and take control of the five families," Alessandro replied calmly, checking his extra ammunition magazines. "And Victor believes killing my daughter will break my spirit so I won't fight back."

"He's a monster," Elena gasped, clutching Mia closer.

"He’s a ghost from my past," Alessandro said, turning to look at her. "Elena, if anything happens to me, there is a hidden egress tunnel under the second storage rack. It leads to a cabin two miles down the ridge. Take the children and go."

"No!" Elena blurted out, surprising even herself. She stepped forward, her eyes fierce with emotion. "You can't go out there alone! You have people who need you now. Sophia needs you. We need you."

Alessandro looked into Elena’s eyes, seeing a strength he hadn't noticed before. She wasn't just a timid housekeeper anymore; she was a mother protecting her family, and somehow, she had included him in that circle.

"I won't lose another family, Elena," Alessandro said quietly. "I'm coming back."

He unlocked the upper exit of the bunker and slipped out into the darkened house. The sound of shattered glass and suppressed gunshots reverberated through the lodge. Victor’s men had breached the rear terrace.

Alessandro moved through the shadowed hallways like a spirit of vengeance. He eliminated two mercenaries in the dining room with silent, lethal precision. Reaching the grand hall, he saw Marco engaging three attackers near the fireplace. Alessandro flanked them, dropping two with precise headshots while Marco took down the third.

"We’re outnumbered, Boss!" Marco yelled, reloading his rifle behind a stone pillar. "They have a light machine gun pinned on the front entrance!"

"Cover me," Alessandro ordered. He unclipped a flashbang from his tactical vest, pulled the pin, and bounced it off the doorframe into the driveway.

A blinding flash and deafening boom shattered the snow-covered night. Alessandro stepped out, his weapons blazing, cutting down the disoriented gunners.

Through the blowing snow, Victor Falcone stepped forward, holding a heavy revolver. "Alessandro!" Victor roared over the wind. "You died eleven months ago in Manhattan! You just haven't had the decency to fall down!"

"You killed my wife, Victor," Alessandro said, his voice icy and clear despite the roaring storm. "Tonight, the debt is settled."
