CHAPTER 6: THE NIGHT THE HOSPITAL WENT SILENT

CHAPTER 6: THE NIGHT THE HOSPITAL WENT SILENT

The phone slipped from Amelia’s hand.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For several seconds, the entire hospital room felt frozen in time.

Emma stared at Amelia.

“Dr. Bell called you?”

Amelia’s face had lost all color.

She looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.

“No…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“No, he shouldn’t be able to call me.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did he say?”

Amelia looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

“He said…”

She swallowed.

“He said I made the same mistake twice.”

Emma felt a cold wave move through her body.

A mistake.

Those words again.

The same words from the note.

The same words from the person who tried to erase her daughter.

“What mistake?”

Amelia looked at the baby.

Then at Emma.

“He thinks I helped you.”

Silence.

Emma tightened her arms around her daughter.

“And did you?”

Amelia looked hurt.

“I came here because I couldn’t live with what happened.”

Emma didn’t answer.

Because she wanted to believe her.

She wanted one person in this nightmare to be honest.

But trust had become something dangerous.

Something that could kill.

Daniel walked toward the door.

“I’m checking the hallway.”

Emma immediately turned.

“No.”

“I need to know if he’s here.”

“You’re not leaving.”

Daniel stopped.

The words surprised him.

Not because she wanted him to stay.

Because she sounded afraid.

Not for herself.

For him.

He looked at her.

“I won’t let him get near you.”

Emma looked away.

“That’s what you should have done the first time.”

The sentence hurt.

But Daniel accepted it.

Because she was right.

He had failed once.

He would not fail again.

He locked the door.

Then checked the windows.

Amelia stood near the wall, still staring at her phone.

“Something is wrong.”

Emma looked at her.

“What?”

Amelia showed them the screen.

A missed call.

Then another.

Then another.

All from the same number.

Dr. Bell.

Daniel frowned.

“Why would he keep calling?”

Amelia shook her head.

“He wants me scared.”

A pause.

“Or he wants me to know something.”

Emma looked at the phone.

“What did he say exactly?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Then repeated:

“He said, ‘You saved the wrong child.’”

The room became silent.

Emma felt her heart drop.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then suddenly—

The lights went out.

Completely.

The baby started crying.

Emma immediately held her close.

“It’s okay.”

She whispered.

“Mommy is here.”

But her voice shook.

Because this time…

The darkness felt different.

The hospital was silent.

No footsteps.

No voices.

No machines.

Nothing.

A hospital should never be this quiet.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

“The power doesn’t just go out here.”

Amelia looked terrified.

“Emergency systems should have started.”

Emma looked around.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel slowly turned toward them.

“It means someone turned them off.”

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming closer.

Daniel stood in front of Emma.

“Stay behind me.”

Emma moved backward with the baby.

Amelia whispered:

“He knows we’re here.”

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

Nobody moved.

Then—

A voice.

“Emma.”

Her blood turned cold.

She knew that voice.

Dr. Bell.

The doctor who had held her hand.

The doctor who had looked into her eyes.

The doctor who told her:

“I’m sorry.”

Emma’s face hardened.

“How dare you come here?”

Silence.

Then his voice.

“You don’t understand what happened.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“You abandoned my daughter.”

“No.”

The voice became emotional.

“I saved her.”

Everyone froze.

Emma stared at the door.

“You saved her?”

“Yes.”

The answer came quickly.

“Because if I hadn’t done what I did, she would have died.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re lying.”

Bell ignored him.

“Emma, listen to me.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You listen.”

She moved closer to the door.

“You told me my daughter died.”

A pause.

“You watched me break.”

Silence.

“And you still lied.”

His voice became quiet.

“I had no choice.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Everyone says that.”

A tear fell.

“Everyone who hurts people says they had no choice.”

The hallway went silent.

Then Bell said something that made everyone freeze.

“Your daughter is not the only child involved.”

Emma stopped.

“What?”

Daniel looked confused.

Amelia looked terrified.

Bell continued:

“There was another baby.”

The room felt like it disappeared.

Another baby?

“What are you talking about?”

Bell’s voice became desperate.

“Your daughter was part of something bigger.”

Emma looked at Daniel.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

But his face suggested otherwise.

Emma saw it.

A tiny change.

A memory.

A fear.

“Daniel.”

He looked away.

“Tell me.”

“I…”

“Tell me!”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“My father had another child.”

Silence.

Emma stared.

“What?”

“He had a daughter before me.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“She disappeared years ago.”

Amelia slowly understood.

“Oh my God.”

Emma looked between them.

“What does that have to do with my baby?”

Nobody answered.

Then Dr. Bell spoke from outside.

“Everything.”

The door handle moved.

Daniel immediately pushed against it.

“Stay back!”

Bell laughed softly.

“You still think you can protect them.”

The sound was terrifying.

Because it wasn’t anger.

It was sadness.

Like he truly believed he was doing something right.

Emma held her daughter tighter.

“Why?”

A pause.

Then Bell said:

“Because your daughter is the only proof left.”

“Proof of what?”

His answer came quietly.

“Who really owns the Carter family.”

The words made no sense.

Until Daniel suddenly stepped back.

His face changed.

“No…”

Emma looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel stared at the door.

Then whispered:

“My father’s missing daughter…”

A pause.

“She had a child.”

Emma felt her heartbeat slow.

No.

Impossible.

Daniel looked at the baby.

Then at her.

“The inheritance wasn’t about the first child.”

His voice trembled.

“It was about blood.”

The baby cried.

And Emma realized something terrifying.

The people chasing her daughter weren’t trying to kill a baby.

They were trying to hide a truth.

A truth that could destroy an entire family.

Suddenly—

The door stopped moving.

Everyone froze.

The footsteps outside disappeared.

Daniel slowly opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

Dr. Bell was gone.

But on the floor outside…

Was another envelope.

Emma stared at it.

“No…”

Because she knew.

Every envelope brought another secret.

Another wound.

Daniel picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Old.

Faded.

A woman holding a baby.

Emma looked closer.

The woman’s face was familiar.

Too familiar.

She turned pale.

“Daniel…”

He looked.

Then his expression broke.

Because the woman in the photo…

Was his father’s missing daughter.

And the baby in her arms…

Was impossible.

Daniel whispered:

“That baby…”

Emma looked at him.

“What?”

May you like

He could barely speak.

“That baby is me.”
