CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO WANTED THE BABY SILENT

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO WANTED THE BABY SILENT
The man’s footsteps were slow.
Too slow.
Like he had all the time in the world.
Emma held her daughter tighter.
Every instinct inside her screamed one thing:
Protect her.
The baby’s tiny body moved against her chest.
Alive.
Warm.
Real.
Only a few hours ago, Emma had been preparing to say goodbye to a child she thought she had lost.
Now she was standing in front of someone who had tried to make sure that goodbye became permanent.
“Who are you?”
Her voice was steady.
But inside, she was falling apart.
The man stopped.
He looked at Daniel first.
Not Emma.
Not the baby.
Daniel.
And somehow that scared her more.
Because it meant this man had power over her husband.
“I’m surprised,” the man said.
His voice was calm.
Almost polite.
“I expected Daniel to handle this better.”
Emma looked at Daniel.
The shame on his face told her everything.
“You know him?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
The man smiled.
“Of course he knows me.”
He stepped closer.
“My name is Richard Hale.”
The name meant nothing to Emma.
But Victoria reacted.
Her face went pale.
“Richard…”
A warning.
A fear.
Richard looked at her.
“Victoria.”
Just her name.
Nothing more.
But Victoria lowered her eyes.
And Emma noticed.
This woman who had always acted untouchable was afraid.
Very afraid.
Emma turned to Daniel.
“What is happening?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I can explain.”
She almost laughed.
Everyone wanted to explain.
After the damage was done.
After her baby was found abandoned.
After her entire world collapsed.
“Then explain.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
The man nodded slightly.
Like he was allowing him to speak.
That small movement made Emma sick.
Because Daniel was not asking permission.
He was waiting for it.
“My family has worked with Richard for years.”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“He helped my father build his business.”
Richard smiled.
“Helped is a generous word.”
Daniel continued.
“After my father died, Richard became… involved.”
“Involved?”
Emma repeated.
Daniel looked away.
“He controlled things.”
The pieces started falling into place.
Victoria’s Bible.
Her cold words.
Daniel’s silence.
The strange fear in the hospital.
This was not just a family problem.
This was something bigger.
Richard looked at the baby.
“So small.”
Emma immediately moved back.
“Don’t look at her.”
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“You think you can stop me?”
The sentence was quiet.
But dangerous.
Emma felt Daniel step closer.
“Richard, enough.”
Everyone looked at him.
Because it was the first time Daniel had challenged him.
Richard smiled.
“There he is.”
A pause.
“The man you used to be.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I said enough.”
Richard laughed softly.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Emma looked between them.
“What does he mean?”
Nobody answered.
Then Lucas spoke.
The little boy was still holding his backpack.
“I heard them talking.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel immediately looked terrified.
“Lucas.”
But the boy continued.
“I heard Grandma talking to him.”
He pointed at Richard.
“She said the baby was a problem.”
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Emma saw it.
He was not angry.
He was calculating.
“Lucas,” Daniel said.
“Go inside.”
“No.”
The boy’s voice shook.
“But Dad, you told me always to tell the truth.”
That sentence destroyed Daniel.
Because he knew.
The child had learned honesty from him.
And now he was forced to face his own lies.
Emma looked at Richard.
“What problem?”
Richard looked at the baby again.
“She carries a name.”
Emma frowned.
“What?”
Richard stepped closer.
“This child was born into a family with a history.”
Nobody spoke.
“She represents something.”
Emma shook her head.
“This is insane.”
Richard smiled.
“You think this is about a baby?”
His eyes became colder.
“It is about inheritance.”
The word hung in the air.
Emma stared.
“What inheritance?”
Daniel looked at her.
Fear returned.
“Emma…”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You’re going to tell me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he said:
“My father left something.”
A pause.
“Something valuable.”
Emma waited.
“He created a trust.”
Richard’s face hardened.
Daniel continued:
“And the trust had conditions.”
“What conditions?”
Daniel looked at the baby.
“The first child born into our family would inherit control.”
Emma felt her stomach turn.
“You’re saying…”
Richard interrupted.
“The baby is the key.”
Silence.
The wind moved through the empty hospital parking lot.
Emma stared at the tiny face in her arms.
Her daughter.
A baby.
A person.
Not a key.
Not a tool.
Not a piece of someone’s plan.
“You tried to kill her…”
Her voice broke.
Richard didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
He simply said:
“I tried to prevent a future problem.”
Emma looked at him.
“You left a newborn outside to die.”
Richard’s expression remained calm.
“Sacrifices are sometimes necessary.”
The moment he said it…
Something inside Emma changed.
The fear disappeared.
Because no one who could say those words deserved her fear.
“You don’t know what a sacrifice is.”
Her voice was low.
“You don’t know what love is.”
Richard stared at her.
And for the first time…
He looked uncertain.
Because Emma was not the weak woman from the hospital room anymore.
She was a mother.
And mothers were dangerous when their children were threatened.
A police siren suddenly echoed in the distance.
Everyone turned.
Two police cars entered the hospital parking lot.
Richard’s expression changed.
“What did you do?”
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel stepped back.
“I called them.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You idiot.”
Daniel looked at Emma.
“I should have done it sooner.”
The police officers approached.
One of them called out:
“Everyone stay where you are.”
Richard looked calm again.
Too calm.
Emma knew.
A man like this did not panic easily.
But then something happened.
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at her.
She walked toward Richard.
Slowly.
Like she was afraid.
But determined.
“Tell them.”
Richard looked annoyed.
“Victoria.”
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“I’ve done enough.”
Emma stared.
The woman who had betrayed her.
The woman who had watched her suffer.
Now looked broken.
“I thought I was protecting my family.”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“But I was protecting a monster.”
Richard’s face darkened.
“You should be careful.”
Victoria ignored him.
She looked at Emma.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma didn’t respond.
Sorry was too small.
Too late.
But Victoria continued.
“The truth is…”
She looked at the baby.
“She was never supposed to die.”
Emma froze.
“What?”
Victoria cried.
“The plan was to take her away.”
The world stopped.
“Take her away?”
Victoria nodded.
“Make everyone believe she was gone.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“You told me she would disappear.”
Victoria looked at her son.
“I lied.”
The words broke him.
Richard stepped forward.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Victoria looked at him.
“No.”
She wiped her tears.
“I’m finally making the right one.”
Then she pulled something from her coat pocket.
A small recording device.
She handed it to the police.
“I recorded everything.”
Richard’s calm face finally cracked.
Just a little.
But Emma saw it.
For the first time…
He was afraid.
The police officers moved toward him.
But Richard suddenly smiled.
And whispered:
“You still don’t understand.”
Everyone stopped.
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
Richard looked at the baby.
Then at Emma.
“There is someone else.”
A cold feeling entered her heart.
“Someone else who knows about the child.”
Richard was taken away.
But his final words followed Emma.
Because she realized something terrifying.
The man who wanted her daughter gone was caught.
But he was not the only enemy.
Someone else was still watching.
Someone else was still waiting.
May you like
And that person knew one thing:
The baby was alive.
