CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE BLUE BLANKET

CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE BLUE BLANKET
The baby’s cry was the only honest sound in the entire world.
Everything else was a lie.
Emma sat on the cold ground behind the hospital, holding her daughter against her chest, refusing to let anyone come near.
Her hands were shaking.
Her entire body was shaking.
But she held the baby firmly.
Carefully.
Like she was afraid the world might try to take her away again.
The newborn’s tiny fingers wrapped around Emma’s thumb.
That small movement broke something inside her.
Because just minutes ago, she had been mourning a dead child.
And now…
She was holding a miracle.
A miracle someone had tried to bury.
“Emma…”
Daniel’s voice came from behind her.
She didn’t turn.
She couldn’t.
If she looked at him, she wasn’t sure what she would feel.
Anger.
Betrayal.
Or worse.
The memory of loving him.
“Don’t come closer.”
Her voice was cold.
The same voice Daniel had never heard before.
“I can explain.”
Emma laughed.
But there was no happiness in it.
“Explain?”
She looked down at the baby.
“Explain why our daughter was found next to medical waste?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Emma, you need to think clearly.”
Emma looked at her.
The woman who had stood there holding a Bible while her granddaughter was abandoned.
“You keep saying that.”
Her eyes burned.
“Think clearly.”
She hugged the baby closer.
“Is that what you told yourself when you left her there?”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“I never wanted this to happen.”
Those words stopped Emma.
Not because they helped.
Because they revealed something.
Not:
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Not:
“You’re mistaken.”
But:
“I never wanted this to happen.”
Emma slowly stood.
The baby in her arms.
“What did you want?”
Silence.
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
The nurses whispered among themselves.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except Emma.
Daniel looked at the ground.
That hurt the most.
Not his anger.
Not his excuses.
His silence.
“Daniel.”
Her voice cracked.
“Look at me.”
Slowly, he did.
And she saw the man she married fighting with himself.
“I loved you.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I trusted you.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Emma…”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Don’t say my name like you’re sorry.”
The baby started crying again.
Emma immediately focused on her.
“It’s okay.”
She whispered.
“Mommy’s here.”
That word.
Mommy.
It felt strange.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
Because she had almost lost the chance to say it.
A nurse approached carefully.
“Mrs. Carter, the baby needs medical attention.”
Emma looked at her.
“Is she hurt?”
The nurse hesitated.
That hesitation scared Emma more than anything.
“She’s cold. She needs to be checked.”
Emma looked at her daughter.
The tiny face.
The tiny body.
A baby who had been outside alone.
“How long?”
Nobody answered.
“How long was she out here?”
The doctor lowered his eyes.
“Based on her condition…”
He swallowed.
“Possibly several hours.”
Emma felt dizzy.
Several hours.
Her daughter had spent several hours alone.
While she cried in a hospital room believing she had lost her.
While her husband stood there.
While someone decided her life wasn’t worth saving.
Emma looked at Daniel.
“Who did this?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Nobody spoke.
Then Lucas stepped forward.
The little boy looked terrified.
But he walked anyway.
“I know.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Lucas, stop.”
But the boy’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
He looked at Emma.
“I have to tell her.”
Emma felt her heart break.
Because Lucas wasn’t just scared.
He was carrying a secret too heavy for a child.
“What do you know?”
Lucas looked at his father.
Then at Victoria.
“They wanted the baby gone.”
Emma froze.
The words were simple.
But they were impossible.
“Who?”
Lucas wiped his eyes.
“My grandma.”
Victoria’s face changed.
“Lucas!”
The boy flinched.
But Emma stepped forward.
“Let him speak.”
Lucas swallowed.
“She told Dad that the baby would destroy everything.”
Emma stared.
“Destroy what?”
Lucas looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Lucas is confused.”
“No.”
Emma’s voice cut through the night.
“He isn’t.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Because you are.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Like he was finally tired of lying.
“I didn’t know she was going to do that.”
Emma stared.
“What?”
Daniel looked broken.
“I knew my mother didn’t want the baby.”
The words hit harder than a slap.
Emma’s breathing stopped.
“You knew?”
“I thought she was just angry.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“She said things. Terrible things. But I never believed…”
“You never believed?”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“So you ignored it?”
Daniel looked away.
“I thought after the birth, she would change.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at the baby.
“She didn’t change.”
A pause.
“She almost killed her.”
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Then suddenly—
A phone rang.
Everyone looked.
It was Victoria’s.
She pulled it from her pocket.
The screen showed one name.
A name that made Daniel go pale.
He grabbed the phone.
“What is this?”
Victoria tried to take it back.
“Give me that.”
Daniel stepped away.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then his face changed.
The blood drained from it.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“No.”
His voice became weak.
“No, that’s not possible.”
Emma watched him.
Something else was happening.
Something bigger.
Daniel looked at her.
Fear filled his eyes.
“They know.”
Emma frowned.
“Who knows?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He looked at the baby.
Then at Emma.
Then whispered:
“The people who wanted her gone.”
A cold wind passed through them.
Emma tightened her grip.
“What people?”
Daniel’s hands trembled.
“My mother wasn’t acting alone.”
The world went silent.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Victoria.
And for the first time, Emma saw something on Victoria’s face.
Not sadness.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Daniel continued:
“There is something you don’t know.”
Emma waited.
Her entire life had changed tonight.
She had discovered her husband was lying.
Her mother-in-law was involved.
Her newborn daughter had been abandoned.
But somehow…
There was more.
“What?”
Daniel swallowed.
“The baby wasn’t supposed to be alive.”
Emma stared.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Someone paid the hospital.”
The words felt unreal.
“To make sure she never left this place.”
Emma looked around.
At the hospital behind them.
At the building where she had trusted people.
At the place where her child had almost disappeared.
“Who?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because before he could speak…
A black car stopped near the hospital entrance.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped out.
Expensive suit.
Cold expression.
He looked directly at Emma.
Then at the baby.
And Emma knew immediately.
This man was not here by accident.
He walked toward them.
The nurses moved back.
The doctor looked nervous.
Daniel whispered:
“Oh God…”
Emma looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Daniel’s face became pale.
“That’s the man my mother works for.”
Emma’s heart dropped.
“Works for?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He owns the company that controls my family.”
The man stopped a few feet away.
His eyes locked on the baby.
Then he smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
A smile that made Emma’s blood run cold.
“So…”
He said quietly.
“The little mistake survived.”
Emma’s entire body went still.
The baby started crying.
And this time…
Emma knew.
The danger had only begun.
May you like
She had found her daughter.
But now she had to fight to keep her.
