CHAPTER 5: THE DOCTOR WHO TRIED TO BURY THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 5: THE DOCTOR WHO TRIED TO BURY THE TRUTH
The note was only a few words.
But Emma felt like those words weighed more than anything she had ever carried.
“The baby survived because I made one mistake.”
She stared at the paper.
Her hands were cold.
Her heart was racing.
Because she understood what it meant.
Dr. Marcus Bell knew.
He knew her daughter was alive.
And he was coming back.
The police officer placed the note on the table.
“We are increasing security around the hospital.”
Emma barely heard him.
Her eyes stayed on the words.
“He will not get near her.”
The officer looked at her.
“You have my word.”
Emma almost smiled.
Almost.
Because everyone had given her promises.
Daniel promised forever.
Victoria promised family.
Dr. Bell promised safety.
And every promise had become a weapon.
“I don’t need promises.”
Her voice was quiet.
“I need my daughter protected.”
The officer nodded.
“We will do everything we can.”
After he left, the room became silent again.
Only Emma, her baby, Daniel, and Amelia remained.
Four people.
Four versions of the truth.
And Emma no longer knew who deserved her trust.
She looked at Daniel.
He was standing near the window.
Broken.
Lost.
But she couldn’t forget.
He had known.
He had stood beside her while she cried.
He had watched her believe her daughter was dead.
And he had said nothing.
“Leave.”
Daniel turned.
“Emma…”
“Leave.”
Her voice was stronger.
“I can’t look at you right now.”
Pain crossed his face.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to hold your child after thinking you lost her.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma looked away.
“Sorry doesn’t bring back those hours.”
He lowered his head.
Then he walked out.
The door closed.
And for the first time in hours…
Emma felt like she could breathe.
Amelia sat quietly.
“You hate him.”
Emma looked at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.”
“That’s worse.”
Emma looked at her daughter.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I loved him.”
Amelia nodded.
“And now?”
Emma touched the baby’s cheek.
“Now I only know one thing.”
“What?”
“I will never let anyone decide my daughter’s life again.”
Amelia watched her.
Then said softly:
“That is why you survived.”
Emma looked at her.
“What?”
“The woman I saw in the delivery room…”
Amelia’s voice became emotional.
“She was afraid.”
A pause.
“But this woman?”
She nodded toward Emma.
“This woman is different.”
Emma looked down.
“I’m still afraid.”
Amelia smiled sadly.
“Courage usually looks like that.”
Three hours later, the hospital changed.
More security.
More guards.
More police.
But Emma knew something.
Walls did not stop people who were determined.
The person who had changed her daughter’s records worked inside the hospital.
The person who helped hide the truth wore a white coat.
Someone everyone trusted.
That thought terrified her.
Around midnight, the baby finally slept.
Emma sat beside her crib.
She couldn’t sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the blue blanket.
The cold ground.
Her daughter alone.
A sound suddenly came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Emma immediately stood.
Her heart started pounding.
The hallway lights flickered.
She moved closer to the door.
Then she heard a voice.
“Emma?”
She froze.
Not because of fear.
Because she knew that voice.
“Daniel?”
She opened the door slightly.
He stood there.
Alone.
His eyes were red.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“I know.”
He looked inside at the baby.
“I just needed to see her.”
Emma hesitated.
Then opened the door.
But she kept distance.
Daniel walked closer to the crib.
He stared at his daughter.
The expression on his face broke something inside Emma.
Because for the first time…
He looked like a father.
Not a liar.
Not a husband who betrayed her.
Just a father.
“She’s beautiful.”
Emma didn’t answer.
Daniel reached toward the crib.
Then stopped.
“Can I?”
Emma looked at him.
After everything…
She still saw the man who loved his child.
The man who made mistakes.
Terrible mistakes.
But mistakes that came from fear.
Not hatred.
Slowly, she nodded.
Daniel touched the baby’s hand.
The baby grabbed his finger.
And Daniel started crying.
“I almost lost her.”
Emma looked away.
“You almost let them take her.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
The honesty surprised her.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just pain.
“I was weak.”
Emma said nothing.
“I thought if I stayed quiet, I could protect everyone.”
He shook his head.
“But I only protected the people who hurt her.”
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I found something.”
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
He took out his phone.
“I checked my father’s old documents.”
He showed her a file.
“The inheritance.”
Emma frowned.
“What about it?”
Daniel enlarged a page.
“There was another condition.”
Emma looked closer.
Her eyes narrowed.
A line was highlighted.
“The inheritance shall be transferred only to the child who is raised by both parents.”
Emma stared.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at her.
“It means Richard couldn’t control everything.”
A pause.
“The baby had to be raised by us.”
Emma’s heart slowed.
“So…”
“So he needed me involved.”
Daniel looked guilty.
“He convinced me that the baby would be taken away temporarily.”
Emma stared.
“And then?”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Then my mother and Dr. Bell changed the plan.”
Emma felt sick.
“They were never going to return her.”
Daniel nodded.
“They wanted to erase her.”
The room became silent.
Then a noise came from outside.
A crash.
Emma immediately turned.
“What was that?”
Daniel moved in front of her.
The hallway lights went out.
The entire floor went dark.
The baby started crying.
Emma grabbed her.
“Stay here.”
Daniel stepped toward the door.
“Daniel, no.”
But he opened it.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
Then a shadow moved at the end.
Daniel shouted:
“Hey!”
The figure ran.
Daniel chased after them.
Emma stayed inside.
Holding her daughter.
Waiting.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Three.
Then Daniel returned.
But his face was pale.
“What happened?”
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel?”
He looked at her.
“He was here.”
“Who?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Dr. Bell.”
Emma felt the air leave her lungs.
“Did you catch him?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I found this.”
He opened his hand.
A small object.
A hospital ID card.
Emma took it.
Her eyes widened.
Because it wasn’t Dr. Bell’s.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone still working inside the hospital.
Someone who had access to the baby.
Someone who could walk through every locked door.
The name on the card made Emma’s blood freeze.
Because it belonged to:
Amelia Rose.
Emma slowly looked up.
Amelia was standing behind them.
Her face was pale.
“No…”
Amelia whispered.
“That’s impossible.”
Emma stepped back.
“You said you were helping me.”
“I am.”
“Then why is your ID in his possession?”
Amelia looked at the card.
Then at Emma.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Emma, wait.”
But Emma shook her head.
Because she had learned one thing.
Every person who came into her life had a secret.
And every secret had a price.
The baby began crying.
Emma looked down.
Then back at Amelia.
“Tell me the truth.”
Amelia opened her mouth.
But before she could speak…
Her phone rang.
Everyone froze.
She looked at the screen.
Her face disappeared.
“What?”
Emma saw fear.
Real fear.
“Who is it?”
Amelia slowly answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then Amelia’s hand began shaking.
She whispered:
“He knows.”
Emma’s blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Amelia looked at her.
And said:
“Dr. Bell.”
A pause.
“He found us.”
The lights flickered again.
May you like
And somewhere in the hospital…
A door opened.
