Chapter 6 - The Midnight Heist

Rain fell in heavy, rhythmic sheets over the deserted streets of Chicago’s exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood.

A sleek black SUV pulled up into the shadowy alleyway behind a four-story limestone townhouse. The dark windows of the structure stared out like the hollow eyes of a ghost.

Inside the vehicle, Marcus sat in the driver's seat, wearing a dark rain jacket. In the passenger seat was Elena, holding her black leather purse containing the master security key card. In the back seat sat Vance’s chief security officer, a former military operative named Frank.

"The building’s internal alarm is linked to a private security company funded by the Sterling family," Frank reported, checking his digital scanner. "If we trigger a silent breaker, response time will be under four minutes."

"Then we don't trigger it," Marcus said, turning to look at Elena. "Are you sure you remember where the lockbox was?"

"Behind the vanity mirror in the second-floor dressing room," Elena nodded, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "The mirror swings open from the left side."

"Let's move," Marcus commanded.

The three of them slipped out of the SUV, keeping low under the shadow of the tall brick alley walls. Elena led the way to the heavy steel service door at the rear of the townhouse. She pulled the master key card from her purse and slid it smoothly through the digital scanner.

The small light on the panel flickered from red to green with a quiet click.

Frank pushed the heavy door open, holding his flashlight low to illuminate the dark, opulent kitchen inside. The air was stale, smelling of old dust and unvented moisture.

"Move fast and quiet," Marcus whispered.

They hurried up the carpeted grand staircase to the second floor, their footsteps muffled by the thick velvet runners. Elena navigated through the dark hallway without hesitation, stopping in front of a pair of frosted glass doors leading into Victoria’s private dressing room.

The room was massive, lined with custom mahogany wardrobes, floor-to-ceiling shoe racks, and a sprawling marble vanity in the center.

Elena walked directly over to the massive gilded mirror mounted on the wall above the vanity. She reached behind the carved wooden frame on the left side, her fingers searching in the dark until she felt a tiny mechanical latch.

She pressed it hard.

With a soft pneumatic hiss, the heavy mirror unlatched and swung open, revealing a square wall safe built directly into the reinforced concrete behind the drywall.

"There it is," Elena whispered, her voice tight with tension.

Marcus stepped forward, shining his flashlight on the keypad. The safe featured a high-security digital lock accompanied by a dual-keyway keyhole.

"Dammit," Marcus swore under his breath. "It's an encrypted biometric lock. We don't have Victoria’s thumbprint or the master code."

Frank stepped up, pulling a compact, heavy-duty electronic bypass kit from his tactical vest. "Give me ninety seconds. These old commercial locks use a standard bypass port on the lower housing."

Frank attached two thin copper probes to the base of the keypad, connecting them to a portable handheld terminal that began cycling through thousands of decryption keys per second.

The digital timer on Frank’s device ticked down rapidly: 00:45... 00:30... 00:15...

Suddenly, a loud, sharp BEEP echoed through the silent dressing room, followed by the heavy mechanical clunk of the safe’s internal bolts retracting!

"Got it," Frank grinned.

Marcus pulled the heavy steel door open.

Inside the safe lay three thick stacks of bound hundred-dollar bills, several velvet jewelry boxes, and lying right in the center—a thick, black leather-bound ledger stamped with the initials R.S.

Marcus reached in and snatched the ledger, flipping it open under his flashlight beam.

Page after page was filled with meticulously hand-written financial entries: dates, offshore account numbers in the Cayman Islands, judicial case file numbers, and dollar amounts ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, signed with the unmistakable signature of Presiding Judge Reginald Sterling.

"This is it," Marcus said, his voice shaking with immense satisfaction. "This is the nail in his coffin."

Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the dressing room ceiling began to flash violently, accompanied by a deafening, high-pitched alarm siren that shattered the silence of the townhouse!

"Security trip!" Frank yelled, grabbing his scanner. "They must have had a secondary weight sensor inside the safe housing! We have three minutes before the armed response team blocks the alley!"

"Run!" Marcus roared, shoving the ledger into his jacket and grabbing Elena’s hand.

They sprinted down the hallway, the siren screaming in their ears, as the dark, peaceful townhouse transformed into a high-stakes escape route.
