Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By midnight, Marcus’s private study had been turned into a war room.

Three of the top corporate and criminal defense attorneys in the United States sat around the long mahogany table, surrounded by stacks of legal briefs, financial ledgers, and encrypted laptops. Standing beside Marcus was Rachel Ross, his chief legal counsel, her face grim as she reviewed the regulatory filings Reginald Sterling had already initiated late that evening.

"Reginald isn't bluffing, Marcus," Rachel warned, tapping her pen against a tablet screen. "He’s already pulled strings with the Department of Children and Family Services. They’ve bypassed the standard forty-eight-hour review protocol. An emergency temporary custody warrant has been drafted under the signature of Judge Harold Vance—no relation to you, but a long-time political ally of Sterling."

"Can we file an injunction?" Marcus asked, pacing behind his desk like a caged tiger.

"We can, but Judge Vance will deny it within five minutes," another attorney chimed in. "Reginald’s network in the state judiciary is deeply entrenched. They operate like a cartel. If they execute that warrant tomorrow morning, state troopers will enforce it. You cannot resist them physically without being arrested."

Elena stood near the corner of the room, holding a tray of coffee cups she had brought for the legal team. Her face was pale, her mind racing as she listened to the high-powered lawyers discuss the fate of the innocent child sleeping upstairs.

"There has to be a way to stop them," Elena spoke up, her voice clear and firm, drawing the attention of every lawyer in the room. "Reginald Sterling is using his power to protect a murderer. There must be someone higher than him who isn't corrupt."

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation," Rachel said softly. "Federal authorities outrank state judges. But the FBI won't intervene in a local custody matter unless there is evidence of systemic corruption or federal crimes being committed by state officials."

"Then we give them evidence," Marcus said, stopping his pacing and looking directly at Rachel. "Reginald Sterling didn't build his political empire cleanly. For twenty years, rumors have circulated that he accepts bribes from property developers to rule in their favor on the appellate court."

"Rumors aren't evidence, Marcus," Rachel countered. "We need hard paper trails, bank accounts, recorded conversations—things that take months, if not years, to uncover."

Elena set the coffee tray down on the table, her brow furrowed in deep thought. "Wait... bank accounts?"

Marcus turned to look at her. "What is it, Elena?"

"When I was working as a housemaid for Victoria six months ago," Elena recalled, her brown eyes widening as the memory resurfaced, "before she moved into this estate... I was cleaning her private office at the Sterling townhouse. I found a heavy steel lockbox hidden behind the vanity mirror in her dressing room."

The room fell completely silent. All three attorneys locked their eyes on the young woman.

"Did you open it?" Rachel asked breathlessly.

"No," Elena shook her head. "It required a digital key and a physical key. But one day, Victoria was shouting on the phone with her father. She was furious because he refused to give her a larger allowance from her trust fund. I heard her scream: 'If you don't transfer the money by Friday, I'll take the black ledger from the townhouse safe directly to the federal prosecutor!'"

Marcus’s eyes flashed with a sudden, blinding light of realization. "A black ledger... Reginald’s off-the-books bribe accounts."

"If that ledger exists," Rachel gasped, her hands trembling over her keyboard, "and if it contains records of Reginald’s illegal transactions, it would trigger an immediate federal indictment! It would shatter his judicial immunity in an instant!"

"Where is the townhouse?" Marcus demanded, taking two long strides toward Elena.

"In the Gold Coast district," Elena replied. "It’s been locked up since Victoria moved in here, but I still have the master security key card Victoria gave me to pick up her dry cleaning!"

Marcus looked at the clock on the study wall. It read 1:15 AM.

"Reginald’s CPS team arrives at eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Marcus declared, his voice ringing with a fierce, dangerous energy. "We have less than seven hours to break into that townhouse, retrieve that ledger, and deliver it to the United States Attorney General's office."

May you like

"Marcus, entering that townhouse could be considered trespassing if Victoria’s legal team revoked Elena’s access," Rachel warned.

"I don't care," Marcus growled, reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a set of car keys. "They tried to take my son. I will burn their entire empire to ashes before the sun comes up."
