Chapter 3 - The Handcuffs at Sundown

The red and blue emergency lights of four police cruisers flashed rhythmically against the stone facade of the Vance estate, turning the dusk into a chaotic blur of light and shadow.

Two uniformed officers stood in the grand foyer, while Detective Thomas Miller of the Special Victims Unit stood near the mahogany desk in the study, reviewing the digital file Marcus had transferred directly to an encrypted law enforcement drive.

On the floor near the sofa, Victoria sat with steel handcuffs locked tightly around her wrists behind her back. Her expensive makeup was smeared across her face in black tracks, her hair wild and disheveled, her manicured appearance utterly destroyed.

"The video evidence is conclusive, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller stated, closing his ruggedized tablet with a loud snap. "This constitutes attempted first-degree murder of a minor, aggravated child endangerment, and filing a false police report."

"Take her away," Marcus said, standing near the window, his arm wrapped around little Leo, who was wrapped in a warm fleece blanket and sleeping peacefully against his chest. "I want a full restraining order issued immediately, and I want her banned from set bail."

"Marcus! You can't do this to me!" Victoria shrieked as the two officers grabbed her under her arms and hauled her to her feet. "My father is the chairman of the appellate court! He will destroy you for this! You hear me, Marcus?! You'll lose everything!"

"Your father's legal influence won't save you from federal child cruelty charges, Miss Sterling," Detective Miller said coldly, turning to wave the officers forward. "Escort the suspect to the transport van."

Victoria kicked and screamed all the way down the grand staircase, her obscenities echoing through the cavernous hallways until the heavy front oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her voice as she was shoved into the back of the police cruiser.

The house fell completely quiet.

Detective Miller turned to Marcus, offering a sympathetic nod. "We’ll need a formal statement from your housekeeper tomorrow morning, Mr. Vance. Make sure she gets medical treatment for that facial trauma."

"I will personally take care of it, Detective. Thank you," Marcus replied.

After the police vehicles pulled out of the gated driveway, their sirens fading into the quiet evening air, Marcus walked down the hall toward the guest suite on the ground floor.

He knocked softly on the wooden door frame. "Elena?"

Elena was sitting on the edge of the bed, wearing a clean, oversized sweater and sweatpants provided by the head housekeeper. A paramedic sat beside her, gently applying an ice pack to her bruised jaw while checking her vitals.

"The swelling is severe, but there are no fractures in the zygomatic bone," the paramedic informed Marcus as he packed his medical kit. "Apply ice for twenty minutes every two hours, and take the prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. She should rest for the next few days."

"Thank you," Marcus said, stepping into the room as the paramedic exited.

Marcus stood near the foot of the bed, holding the sleeping infant in his arms. The silence between them was agonizing, weighed down by the immense burden of what had transpired on the patio hours earlier.

"Elena," Marcus began, his voice rough with unshed tears. "There are no words in the English language that can undo what I did to you today. I let an evil woman poison my mind, and I raised my hand against the person who saved my son’s life."

Elena looked up at him. Her left eye was partially swollen, but her expression contained no hatred.

"You were blind, Mr. Vance," Elena said softly, her voice raspy. "Victoria played her role very well for three years. She knew your weaknesses. She knew how terrified you were of losing Leo the same way you lost his mother."

"That is no excuse!" Marcus said sharply, taking a step closer, his eyes burning with remorse. "I struck an innocent woman! I struck my son's protector! I will never forgive myself for that moment!"

"I don't ask you to hate yourself, Mr. Vance," Elena replied, offering a faint, painful smile. "I only ask that you look closer at the people you let into your life from now on. Leo deserves a father whose eyes are open."

Marcus looked down at the infant sleeping soundly against his chest, then at the young woman who had willingly plunged into icy water to pull his child from the dark.

"I am firing the entire house security team tonight for failing to monitor the grounds," Marcus declared firmly. "And as of this moment, Elena, you are no longer a maid in this house."

Elena’s heart dropped. "Mr. Vance... please... I need this job to pay for my sister’s medical treatments—"

"You didn't let me finish," Marcus interrupted gently, dropping down to one knee beside her bed, just as he had done in his study. "You are no longer a maid. I am appointing you as the Head Guardian and Private Caretaker of my son, with a salary four times what you make now, full medical benefits for your entire family, and permanent residence in the east wing of this estate."

Elena stared at him in disbelief, her hands trembling over her lap. "Marcus... I can't accept that..."

"You saved my son's life today, Elena," Marcus said, his voice filled with an unbreakable resolve. "You protected my family when I was too blind to see the danger right in front of me. This isn't charity. This is the absolute bare minimum I owe you for your courage."
