Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Three weeks passed.

The news of Victoria Sterling’s arrest sent shockwaves through Chicago’s elite high society. Headlines dominated the tabloids for days: "SOCIALITE ATTEMPTS TO DROWN BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR," complete with leaked screenshots of the estate’s security footage.

Inside the Vance estate, life began to adopt a new, quiet rhythm.

The east wing had been fully renovated for Elena and her younger sister, Clara, a sweet eight-year-old girl suffering from a rare kidney condition. With Marcus funding the top medical specialists in the country, Clara was finally receiving the advanced treatments she desperately needed.

Elena sat on the sunny terrace, holding little Leo on her lap as he played with a wooden rattle. Her face had healed, leaving only a faint, almost invisible mark near her cheekbone.

Marcus walked out onto the terrace carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade. He wore a crisp white shirt with rolled-up sleeves, his face looking lighter, relieved of the toxic shadow that Victoria had cast over him for years.

"How is he doing today?" Marcus asked, sitting on the bench beside her and handing her a glass.

"He ate all his breakfast and took a two-hour nap," Elena smiled, adjusting Leo's sun hat. "He’s growing so fast, Marcus."

Marcus watched them, a warm, genuine smile touching his lips. Over the past three weeks, watching Elena care for Leo had filled his home with a sense of peace he hadn't felt since his wife had passed away during childbirth three years ago. Elena didn't treat Leo like a duty; she treated him like her own flesh and blood.

Suddenly, the heavy iron gates at the end of the long driveway buzzed, and Marcus’s phone began to vibrate on the glass table.

Marcus picked up his phone, his smile instantly vanishing as he read the caller ID: REGINALD STERLING.

He slid the screen to answer, placing it on speaker. "Reginald."

"Marcus, you ungrateful, arrogant bastard!" a deep, booming voice barked from the speaker, laced with immense power and venom. Reginald Sterling, Victoria’s father and the Senior Presiding Judge of the Appellate Court, sounded like a man possessed. "You have paraded my daughter through the media like a circus freak! You’ve ruined my family's legacy!"

"Your daughter attempted to murder my child, Reginald," Marcus said coldly, his voice devoid of any fear. "She is currently sitting in a maximum-security remand facility awaiting trial. If anything, she got off easy."

"Listen to me very carefully, Vance," Reginald sneered, his tone dropping into a dangerous, threatening murmur. "I built the legal framework of this state. I own the prosecutors, I own the judges, and I own the regulatory boards. If you do not drop all criminal charges against Victoria by five o'clock tomorrow afternoon, I will unleash every state agency I control upon Vance Enterprises."

Marcus leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "Are you threatening me, Reginald?"

"I am promising you destruction," Reginald snapped. "I will freeze your corporate assets under financial fraud investigations, I will revoke your estate’s land permits, and most importantly, Marcus... I will file an emergency petition with the Child Protective Services Board claiming you are an unfit father living in a house where an infant was nearly drowned."

Elena gasped, her hand instinctively pulling Leo closer to her chest.

Marcus stood up from the terrace bench, his tall frame looming over the table, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the glass.

"You think you can use CPS to take my son?" Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, subterranean rage.

"I can, and I will," Reginald declared triumphantly. "My political allies run the regional CPS board. One phone call from me, and a team of social workers accompanied by state troopers will arrive at your gates tomorrow morning to remove Leo from your custody until the 'investigation' is completed—which will take years."

Reginald paused, letting the weight of his threat settle over the terrace.

"You have until five o'clock tomorrow, Marcus. Drop the charges against Victoria, release a public statement admitting the video was an edited misunderstanding, or kiss your son goodbye."

The call disconnected with a sharp, cold beep.

Marcus stood frozen on the terrace, the silence of the afternoon returning, but now it felt suffocating, heavy with the terrifying promise of an impending war.

Elena stood up, her brown eyes wide with fear as she held Leo tightly. "Marcus... can he really do that? Can he take Leo away?"

May you like

Marcus slowly turned to look at her. The peace that had filled his heart over the past three weeks was instantly replaced by the deadly, cold focus of a father backed into a corner.

"Reginald Sterling thinks he owns this city," Marcus said softly, his dark eyes burning with an unholy fire. "He’s about to find out what happens when you try to take a lion’s cub."
