Chapter 3 - The War Cabinet

By 8:00 AM on Monday morning, I sat in a conference room on the 22nd floor of the Pinnacle Building in downtown Nashville.

Marcus Thorne sat across from me. He was fifty years old, had sharp grey eyes, and wore a double-breasted suit that screamed wealth and authority. Beside him sat my new legal team: a forensic accountant named Brenda Higgins and a private investigator named Frank Miller.

"Mrs. Bradley," Marcus began, laying out a thick stack of documents. "We have obtained the full digital dump from the security system seized from your house. What we found goes far beyond a custody dispute. This is systematic, premeditated criminal conspiracy."

Frank Miller, the investigator, slid a tablet toward me. "Your husband didn't just install three cameras, Emily. He installed six hidden pinhole cameras—including ones in your bedroom and bathroom. He was attempting to capture footage of you looking tired, yelling, or taking prescription medication."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "I don't take prescription medication."

"He knew that," Frank said grimly. "So three weeks ago, Diane started visiting your house while you were at work. We found footage of her placing crushed sleep aids into your evening tea."

My hands slammed onto the table. "She was drugging me?!"

"Yes," Marcus Thorne cut in firmly. "They were creating a pattern. Drugging you so you would sleep late, then filming Noah crying while you were asleep, making it look like severe neglect. They have been building this digital dossier for fourteen months."

"Why now?" I asked, my voice shaking with rage. "Why accelerate it last week?"

"Because of this," Brenda Higgins, the forensic accountant, interjected. She opened a financial ledger. "Two weeks ago, the trustees of the Charles Bradley Dynasty Trust issued a notice. The trust rules were being audited. If Ryan didn't claim full control of the primary beneficiary—Noah—by his fifth birthday next month, fifty percent of the trust's capital would be irrevocably donated to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying precision.

The pressure was mounting. Ryan and Diane were running out of time. They needed to get rid of me before Noah turned five, or lose two million dollars.

"Where are they now?" I asked Marcus.

"They posted bail late Saturday night," Marcus replied. "Arthur Vance secured their release on a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bond. They are currently staying at Diane’s estate in Belle Meade."

"And Noah?"

"I have already secured a temporary emergency custody order," Marcus smiled thin, razor-sharp smile. "Ryan is legally barred from coming within one thousand feet of you or Noah. Furthermore, we filed an emergency freeze on all joint accounts."

"They still have money," I noted. "Diane has her own funds."

"Not for long," Marcus said, leaning forward. "This morning, we are filing a civil RICO lawsuit against Diane Bradley, Ryan Bradley, and Arthur Vance’s law firm for conspiracy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and fraud. We aren't just going to defend you in family court, Emily. We are going to strip them of every asset they own."

"What about Ryan's attempt to frame me?"

"That’s the beauty of their arrogance," Marcus chuckled darkly. "In their haste to upload those videos to an encrypted cloud server, Ryan used his personal iCloud account. He left a digital paper trail showing he personally edited the video clips, cutting out the parts where Diane threatened Noah with the chain before turning on the camera."

My phone buzzed on the mahogany table. It was a text message from an unlisted number.

Text: Emily, this is Ryan. Please. My mother forced me to do this. She threatened to cut me out of Dad's will if I didn't help her. Meet me alone at the park. I'll give you everything you need to destroy her. Just don't take Noah from me.

I looked up at Marcus and handed him my phone.

Marcus read the message, his eyes lighting up like a predator that had just spotted its prey.

"He's panicking," Marcus said softly. "The weak link in their chain just snapped. Frank, draft a reply. We're going to give Ryan exactly what he wants—a chance to dig his own grave."
