Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Sunshine

May 2027. Noah’s Fifth Birthday.

The sanctuary garden was decorated with bright blue and green balloons, dinosaur banners, and long tables covered in cake, ice cream, and presents.

Dozens of children from the local neighborhood and the shelter were running through the splash pad, their joyful screams echoing under the clear blue sky.

My mother stood by the cake table, placing five bright yellow candles on a massive dinosaur-shaped birthday cake. Marcus Thorne was sitting on a wooden bench, wearing a silly party hat and attempting to tie a balloon animal for a small girl.

I sat on a picnic blanket near the edge of the lawn, taking in the beauty of the afternoon.

Noah ran over to me, his cheeks flushed red from running, his dark curls damp with sweat. He threw his arms around my neck, hugging me with all his tiny strength.

"Mommy!" he cheered, pointing toward the sky. "Look! The clouds are moving super fast today!"

I looked up at the fluffy white clouds drifting peacefully across the deep blue sky.

"Do you know why they move, baby?" I asked softly, pulling him into my lap and kissing his warm cheek.

Noah looked up at me, his large brown eyes bright with innocence and absolute trust.

"Because the wind is pushing them to a happy place!" he announced proudly.

I held him tight against my heart, listening to the steady, beat of his breathing, feeling the warmth of his skin.

"That's right, sweetheart," I whispered, resting my chin on his head as the warm spring breeze brushed past us, carrying away every last remnant of the dark past. "They're going to a happy place. And so are we."

Noah smiled, kissed my cheek, and ran back onto the sunny lawn to play with his friends, his laughter ringing out clear, bright, and forever unbroken.
