Chapter 7 - I Own Your Entire Empire, NathanClaire returned to the Blackwood headquarters two days after the gala.

The lobby went silent.
Employees stared from behind reception desks, elevator doors, security gates, and glass conference rooms. Some had seen the viral footage. Some had heard rumors. Some had worked late nights cleaning up Nathan’s reckless decisions and already suspected the empire was built on borrowed time.
Claire walked in without Nathan.
Without Bianca.
Without apology.
Diane Mercer followed with legal staff. Charles stayed home at Claire’s request.
This was her company now.
She would not enter it as somebody’s daughter.
She would enter it as owner.
The acting CFO met her near the elevators.
“Mrs. Blackwood—”
Claire paused.
“Ms. Whitmore.”
The correction echoed softly.
The CFO nodded quickly.
“Ms. Whitmore.”
They rode to the top floor.
Nathan’s office looked exactly as Claire remembered.
Oversized desk.
City view.
Leather chairs.
Framed magazine covers.
A portrait of Nathan shaking hands with a governor in front of a project Claire’s money had saved.
She looked at it for a long moment.
Then turned it toward the wall.
“Begin.”
The audit team started with the obvious fraud.
Unauthorized transfers.
Improper consulting fees.
Executive expenses.
Hidden personal charges.
But by afternoon, they found something worse.
Nathan had delayed safety repairs at three redevelopment sites to preserve cash flow before investor review. Complaints had been buried. Tenant relocation funds were underfunded. Contractor payments were late. One project manager had been fired after warning that a building was unsafe for winter occupancy.
Claire read the report twice.
Then a third time.
Her humiliation at the gala became something sharper.
Bigger.
Nathan had not only betrayed her.
He had endangered people.
She called an emergency meeting with project managers.
They entered nervously.
Some expected firings.
Some expected blame.
Claire stood at the front of the room with the safety files in her hand.
“Tell me everything Nathan told you not to put in writing.”
Nobody spoke.
She waited.
A woman named Mara Ellis finally raised her hand.
“I reported the East Haven heating failures three times.”
Claire nodded.
“Continue.”
After Mara, others spoke.
Plumbing failures.
Electrical delays.
Mold complaints.
Unpaid crews.
Suppressed inspection requests.
Nathan had been polishing the empire’s image while the foundation cracked under families who trusted his buildings.
Claire felt sick.
At the end of the meeting, she said one sentence.
“No one will be punished for telling the truth.”
Several employees cried.
That night, Claire visited East Haven herself.
No cameras.
No press.
Just her, Mara, two engineers, and a legal representative.
A mother recognized her from the news.
“You’re the wife,” the woman said.
Claire looked at the broken heater behind her.
“No,” she said softly. “I’m the owner responsible for fixing this.”
The woman stared.
Claire continued.
“Repairs start tonight. Temporary housing will be offered by morning. You should not have had to wait.”
The woman’s face changed.
“Will this be another promise?”
Claire shook her head.
“No. It will be a signed order.”
She signed it on the hood of a car under a streetlight.
By dawn, crews were working.
By noon, families were relocated.
By evening, Nathan’s name was removed from every active project page.
Claire did not feel victorious.
She felt awake.
Owning an empire was not a line thrown at a cheating husband.
It was responsibility.

And unlike Nathan, she intended to carry it.
