133 He Threw Her a Check to Leave, Until She Revealed She Owned His Entire Empire

Nathan Blackwood threw the check at his wife like she was a servant asking for wages.

It landed against Claire Blackwood’s chest, slipped down the front of her torn ivory blouse, and fell onto the marble floor of the Blackwood mansion.

The ballroom went silent.

Not fully silent.

There was still the soft hum of the chandelier, the rain striking the tall windows, and the breathless whisper of rich people pretending they had not come closer to watch a woman be humiliated.

But the music had stopped.

The laughter had stopped.

Even the waiters along the wall had frozen with silver trays in their hands.

Claire stood near the grand staircase, one hand pressed to the small cut near her lip, the other hanging at her side. She had not meant to bleed. She had only tried to pull away when Nathan grabbed her wrist too hard in front of everyone.

Behind Nathan, his mistress smiled.

Bianca Vale.

A woman in a red satin dress, her diamonds bright enough to blind anyone who did not look too closely at the cruelty in her eyes.

She leaned against Nathan’s arm as if she had already taken Claire’s place.

“Don’t make this uglier than it has to be,” Bianca said softly.

Claire looked at her.

Then at Nathan.

Her husband.

The man she had married quietly three years ago when he was charming, ambitious, and still pretending to be kind.

Nathan lifted his chin.

“That check is more than you deserve.”

Claire looked down.

Five million dollars.

A number meant to look generous.

A number meant to buy her silence, her dignity, her marriage, and every year she had spent helping Nathan build the empire he now used to throw her away.

She bent down slowly.

Picked up the check.

For one moment, Nathan smiled.

He thought she was accepting defeat.

Claire held the check between both hands.

Then tore it in half.

The sound was small.

But it cut through the room like a blade.

Nathan’s smile disappeared.

Claire tore it again.

And again.

The pieces fell at her feet like dead leaves.

Bianca’s mouth tightened.

Nathan stepped forward.

“Have you lost your mind?”

Claire wiped the blood from the corner of her lip with the back of her hand.

Then she reached into her clutch and took out her phone.

Nathan laughed coldly.

“Who are you calling? Some lawyer who can’t afford this room?”

Claire looked him directly in the eye.

“No.”

The line connected.

A man answered instantly.

“Yes, Miss Claire?”

The room shifted.

Miss Claire.

Not Mrs. Blackwood.

Not ma’am.

Miss Claire.

Nathan frowned.

Claire’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Tell my father I’m done pretending.”

The man on the phone went silent for half a second.

Then answered, “Understood.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Your father?”

Claire lowered the phone.

The front doors of the mansion opened.

Not dramatically.

Officially.

Two uniformed officers stepped inside, followed by three men in dark suits carrying legal folders. Behind them came a woman with silver hair, sharp eyes, and the icy confidence of someone who never entered a room without authority.

“Mrs. Blackwood?” one officer asked.

Claire lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

The silver-haired woman opened a folder.

“Nathan Blackwood, by emergency court order, all Blackwood Holdings liquid assets, executive accounts, property transfers, and corporate voting shares connected to the Whitmore Trust are frozen pending fraud review.”

The ballroom erupted.

“What?”

“Frozen?”

“Is this real?”

Nathan went pale.

Bianca grabbed his arm.

The officer looked at him.

“Sir, you are required to leave the property.”

Nathan blinked.

“My property?”

Claire stepped over the torn pieces of the check.

“No, Nathan.”

Her voice was steady now.

Every guest turned toward her.

Claire looked at the chandeliers, the marble floor, the staircase, the portraits, the empire Nathan had spent years bragging belonged to him.

Then she looked back at her husband.

“I own your entire empire.”

Nathan’s face drained of color.

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“And tonight, I’m taking it back.”
