Chapter 4 - The Counter-Ambush

The trap was set at the Villarreal corporate docks in Houston.
According to the intelligence gathered by Carlos’s team, Estefanía had provided the Mendoza Syndicate with the encryption codes to Alejandro’s automated shipping manifests, allowing them to smuggle illicit cargo through his secure ports, which would inevitably ruin his empire if uncovered by federal authorities.
Estefanía believed she was executing the perfect revenge. She thought Alejandro was entirely occupied with his sick daughter at the mansion.
She was wrong.
At 2:00 a.m., a fleet of black delivery vans pulled into the dark, rain-slicked dockyard of Pier 14. A dozen armed men in tactical gear stepped out, guided by a disheveled but spiteful Estefanía, who held a stolen corporate tablet.
"The main security grid is offline for the next twenty minutes," Estefanía hissed to the Mendoza strike leader. "Move the crates into the central vault. Once the system reboots, the manifest will show the cargo belonged to the Villarreal family since last month. Alejandro won't be able to explain it to the feds."
"You did well, beautiful," the strike leader grinned, raising his weapon. "The Mendozas will keep their promise. You’ll be on a private jet to Switzerland before dawn."
"She won't be going anywhere."
The voice boomed from the overhead crane speakers, shattering the quiet hum of the harbor.
Suddenly, the massive industrial floodlights of the pier snapped on, blinding the intruders with an artificial daylight. From the shadows of the shipping containers, forty heavily armed private security operators dressed in Villarreal tactical gear emerged, their laser sights painting the chests of the Mendoza men in a sea of red dots.
Estefanía screamed, dropping the tablet as it shattered on the wet asphalt.
From the center of the security line, Alejandro stepped forward, wearing a dark trench coat over his charcoal suit. Beside him stood Carlos, holding a heavy assault rifle.
"Alejandro!" Estefanía gasped, backing away until her spine hit the side of a delivery van. "How... how did you—"
"You always underestimated Doña Lupita," Alejandro said, his voice carrying an icy finality over the crashing sound of the ocean waves. "You forgot that she has been with my family since before you were a child. She knew about your hidden safe in the guest house. She found your backup drive weeks ago."
The Mendoza strike leader looked around, realizing they were completely surrounded, outgunned, and caught in a bottleneck. He slowly lowered his weapon, signaling his men to drop theirs. "Villarreal... this is a misunderstanding. We were misled by this woman—"
"Save it for the federal tribunal," Alejandro cut him off coldly. "Carlos, disarm them. The federal authorities are already waiting at the gate to take custody of the Mendoza operatives for high-level smuggling and corporate terrorism."
"And her?" Carlos asked, pointing his weapon directly at Estefanía, who had fallen to her knees in the puddle of rain, her expensive hair ruined, her face twisted in pure terror.
Alejandro walked over, stopping right in front of her. He looked down at the woman who had slept in his bed while starving his child.
"You wanted to break my daughter, Estefanía," Alejandro whispered, leaning down so only she could hear him over the wind. "You wanted to see her small, pale, and crying on the floor. Look at yourself now. You are exactly what you tried to make her."
"Please, Alejandro... I loved you... the wealth, the pressure made me crazy..." she begged, grabbing the hem of his coat with her muddy fingers.

Alejandro stepped back, pulling his coat from her grip as if she were a toxic disease. "Take her away. Make sure she gets the maximum security block. No bail. No visitors. Ever."
As the federal agents moved in, locking the handcuffs around Estefanía's wrists, she let out a long, ragged scream of despair—a sound that was swallowed entirely by the roar of the sea.
