Chapter 5 - Shadows and Healing

Two weeks later.

The storm had passed. The Moretti syndicate was completely dismantled, its leaders arrested or eliminated, its assets seized by federal authorities using the evidence Kaelen Cross had sacrificed his life to gather.

The Cross estate had been restored. The shattered glass was replaced, the courtyard walls rebuilt, and the security protocols updated. But the atmosphere within the eighteen-acre compound had changed fundamentally.

The eastern courtyard—once a barren, terrifying zone where no man dared to tread—was now bathed in warm afternoon sunlight.

In the center of the courtyard sat Aria. She was dressed in a warm, clean pink sweater and fitted boots, her cheeks full and pink with health, her dark hair neatly brushed. She was sitting on a plush outdoor blanket, holding a set of sketchbooks and colored pencils.

Beside her lay Phantom.

The 130-pound killer dog was stretched out lazily in the grass, his head resting squarely in Aria’s lap. The steel chains that once bound him were gone; the courtyard gates stood wide open. Phantom didn't need chains anymore. He had found his purpose.

Holden walked into the courtyard holding a tray with warm cocoa and fresh pastries. He wore a simple sweater instead of his usual intimidating suits.

"How is the drawing coming along?" Holden asked, sitting down on the blanket beside his niece.

Aria held up her sketchbook proudly. It was a drawing of a grand house, a tall man holding a little girl's hand, and a giant black dog wearing a gold crown.

"That's Phantom," she pointed at the dog. "He's the king of the house."

Holden chuckled softly, reaching out to stroke Phantom’s broad head. Phantom gave a low, content sigh, his tail giving two heavy thumps against the grass.

"He certainly acts like it," Holden smiled. He looked at Aria, his eyes softening with a warmth he hadn't felt in ten years. "Your father would be proud of you, Aria. You're the bravest person I've ever met."

Aria looked down at the silver locket hanging around her neck. "Do you miss him?"

"Every day," Holden said honestly. "I spent ten years thinking he was a ghost... thinking I was alone in this world. But he sent you to me. He brought us back together."

Vance walked into the courtyard, holding a tablet. "Boss, the legal team just finished processing the adoption papers. She is officially Aria Cross now. Your legal ward and sole heir."

Aria looked up, her eyes wide. "Does that mean I get to stay here forever?"

May you like

Holden wrapped his arm around her tiny shoulders, pulling her close. "Forever, little one. Nobody will ever hurt you again. You have the entire Cross family protecting you now."

Phantom let out a soft, playful bark, as if agreeing with every word.
