Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

"Secure the courtyard!" Holden roared, his authority returning in an instant. "Vance, get the kid and the dog inside the main vault! NOW!"
"I'm not leaving Kaelen," Aria declared stubbornly, her tiny hand buried deep in Phantom’s dark fur.
Phantom didn't wait for orders. He stood up, towering over the little girl, his body forming a physical shield between her and the direction of the coming attack. He let out a deep, echoing bark that signaled he was ready for war.
"She stays with me," Holden barked, scooping Aria up in his left arm despite her small protest. Her body was shockingly light—she was skin and bones. Phantom trotted right beside Holden, his shoulder pressed against Holden's leg, tracking the perimeter with lethal focus.
Heavy automatic gunfire shattered the winter night.
Glass exploded along the ground-floor conservatory as armed men clad in tactical black gear burst through the perimeter fence. These were not street thugs; they moved with military precision—the iron-clad mercenaries of the Moretti Family, Holden’s fiercest rivals in the tri-state area.
"Cross!" a voice boomed through a megaphone outside the courtyard wall. "Hand over the girl and Kaelen’s drive, and we’ll leave your estate standing! Refuse, and we burn everything to the ground!"
Holden reached his fortified second-floor study, slamming the heavy steel-reinforced doors shut. Vance and three elite bodyguards set up defensive positions near the entrance.
Holden set Aria down on a leather sofa. Phantom immediately hopped up beside her, curling his 130-pound frame around her small body, his head resting on her lap like an armored sentinel.
Holden knelt before her, his eyes locked on hers. "Aria, look at me. Who was your father?"
"Kaelen," she said softly, pulling a tarnished silver locket from beneath her duct-taped coat. "He died three weeks ago in the mountains. He was hiding from the bad men. Before he died, he gave me this... and he told me to find the dog in the black fortress."
Holden took the locket with trembling fingers. He popped the latch. Inside was a tiny photograph of his younger brother, smiling alongside a young woman—and around Kaelen's neck hung a military-grade dog tag stamped with a serial number. But behind the photo was a micro-encryption drive.
Kaelen’s drive.
"Your father wasn't just hiding," Holden realized, his mind piecing together ten years of lies. Kaelen hadn't betrayed the family ten years ago. He had gone undercover to gather evidence to dismantle the Moretti syndicate from the inside—to protect Holden from a conspiracy that reached the highest levels of government.
"They killed him because he found out what the Morettis were planning," Holden muttered, a cold, dark fury settling into his veins. "And they tracked you here to destroy the evidence."
A sudden explosion rocked the mansion. Dust rained down from the ceiling as the lights flickered and died, replaced by the eerie red glow of emergency backup lighting.
"They're through the lower hall!" Vance yelled over the sound of splintering wood and gunfire. "Boss, we're outnumbered three to one! We need to hit the escape tunnel!"
"There's no running," Holden said, pulling a custom gold-engraved Kimber .45 from his shoulder holster. He looked at Aria, then at Phantom. "This ends tonight."
Holden looked into Phantom’s amber eyes. "Phantom... guard her."

The dog gave a single, firm nod, resting his broad chin on Aria’s knee, his muscles tenser than steel cables.
Holden turned to his men, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "Vance, clear the hallway. We're going to show the Morettis what happens when they touch a Cross."
