Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

Six months later, the Duca estate was once again filled with the scent of fresh coffee, polished marble, and warm bread.

But the kitchen was different now.

Valerio Duca had been arrested by federal authorities after a massive joint raid on his New York pharmaceutical labs, sparked by the evidence Claire’s trust and Alessandro’s security team had provided to the SEC and the FBI. He was currently serving a twenty-five-year sentence in a federal penitentiary for corporate fraud, attempted murder, and chemical trafficking.

The family shipping business was now fully under Alessandro’s control, cleaner and more profitable than ever before.

But the biggest change was not in the ledger books.

On a bright, sunny Saturday morning, Alessandro sat at the kitchen island, reading the financial news. In front of him sat a cup of steaming espresso—chemically tested, perfectly safe, and rich.

Beside him sat Emma, wearing her favorite yellow dress with purple star-print leggings. She had a small plate of chocolate chip pancakes in front of her, her gray rabbit tucked neatly under her arm.

Sophia walked into the kitchen, wearing a beautiful green silk dress instead of her gray housekeeping uniform. She was no longer a servant in this house; she was the director of the Duca Family Foundation, a charitable organization she had helped build to support the families of victims of corporate crime.

“Are you ready for your checkup, Mr. Alessandro?” Emma asked, looking up from her pancakes and tapping her purple-framed glasses with her finger.

Alessandro smiled—a genuine, warm smile that had become a regular feature on his face over the last few months. He picked up his cup and held it out toward her.

“Go ahead, doctor,” he said.

Emma leaned close to the cup, took a deep, dramatic sniff, and then looked up at him with a serious, professional expression.

“It smells perfect,” she declared, her eyes shining with absolute trust. “No bad medicine today.”

“Good,” Alessandro said, taking a slow, appreciative sip of his coffee. He looked at Sophia, who was watching them from across the kitchen, her eyes filled with a deep, peaceful happiness.

“Because I plan on drinking many more cups in this house, with both of you.”

As the morning sun bathed the kitchen in a warm, golden light, the shadows of the past were finally gone, replaced by the unbreakable promise of a future built on love, courage, and the brave warning of a three-year-old girl.
