Chapter 1 - The Chemical Echo

The heavy porcelain cup sat untouched on the cold marble of the kitchen island. Alessandro Duca stood completely still, his eyes locked on the dark liquid. A tiny, oily film had begun to settle on the surface of the espresso, catching the morning sunlight and refracting a faint, synthetic blue sheen that did not belong in high-grade Colombian beans.
“Sophia,” Alessandro said, his voice flat, devoid of the immense power he wielded outside these walls. “Take Emma back to the laundry room. Lock the door. Do not let anyone in but Caleb.”
Sophia Alvarez did not ask questions. The terror in her eyes was a physical thing, casting a shadow over her pale face as she scooped her three-year-old daughter into her arms. Emma buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, her small hand still clutching the gray, worn ear of her rabbit.
“Yes, Mr. Duca,” Sophia whispered, her voice cracking. She retreated quickly, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind her.
Alessandro turned his attention back to the kitchen staff. There were four people in the room: Marco, the head chef who had worked for the Duca family for ten years; Lucia, the quiet maid who had been hired only three months ago; Arthur, the kitchen assistant; and the new breakfast cook, a man named Thomas who had been vetted by Alessandro’s security team just last week.
None of them moved. The air was thick with the scent of roasted garlic, butter, and a faint, almond-like bitterness that was slowly beginning to rise from the cooling cup.
“Marco,” Alessandro said quietly, pulling a clean linen napkin from a drawer. “Bring me a sterile glass vial from the pantry. The ones we use for olive oil samples.”
Marco hurried, his hands shaking so violently that he nearly dropped the glass as he handed it over. Alessandro carefully poured the espresso into the vial, sealed it, and wrapped it in the napkin. He then looked at the remaining liquid in the cup.
“No one touches anything in this kitchen,” Alessandro commanded. “No one leaves. If a single plate is washed, if a single counter is wiped down before my security team arrives, I will consider it an act of treason against this house. Do you understand?”
The staff nodded in unison, their faces pale under the bright fluorescent lights.
The Arrival of the ShieldTen minutes later, the heavy iron gates of the Duca estate creaked open, and a black armored SUV pulled up to the kitchen entrance. Caleb, Alessandro’s chief of security and a former tactical specialist, strode into the kitchen. He didn't look like a bodyguard; he looked like a shadow given form.
“What do we have, Boss?” Caleb asked, his eyes immediately scanning the room, assessing the body language of the servants.
Alessandro handed him the wrapped vial. “Take this to our private lab in the city. Tell Dr. Sterling I need a full toxicology report within two hours. Specifically, screen for cardiac glycosides or anything that mimics a natural heart attack.”
Caleb’s eyes darkened. “A heart attack? Like the one your uncle had last winter?”
“Exactly like that,” Alessandro said, his jaw tightening. “And Caleb—while you’re there, run a background check on Sophia Alvarez’s deceased husband. Find out what killed him, and who prescribed his medicine.”
Caleb nodded once, took the vial, and disappeared as quickly as he had arrived.
Alessandro walked over to the kitchen window, looking out over the manicured lawns of his estate. The Duca empire was vast, spanning international shipping, high-end real estate, and logistics. But wealth of that scale came with a price. Alessandro had spent the last three years cleaning the syndicate’s operations, steering them into legitimate, legal avenues.
But old habits died hard, and his relatives—specifically his cousin, Valerio Duca—had been vocal about their displeasure with the new, clean direction of the family business.

Valerio wanted the old ways back. The lucrative, dirty ways.
And Alessandro’s death was the quickest way to get them.
