Chapter 7 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE THORNE NAME

Arthur Thorne had died six years earlier.

The official cause was cardiac failure following complications from cancer.

Dr. Peter Lang had signed the death certificate.

Celeste had ordered a private cremation before Marcus returned from an overseas negotiation.

At the time, Marcus had believed his mother was protecting him from seeing his father suffer.

Now every detail looked different.

Daniel obtained Arthur’s archived medical records.

Several pages were missing.

A former night nurse named Margaret Wells had resigned two days after Arthur’s death and moved to a small town in Vermont.

When Daniel found her, she refused to speak over the phone.

Marcus traveled to see her while Khloe remained with Elias in the neonatal unit.

Before leaving, he sent Khloe a message.

I’m investigating Isabella’s claim about my father. Daniel will stay at the hospital. I will return tonight.

Khloe replied for the first time.

Be careful.

Marcus read the two words repeatedly.

Margaret Wells lived in a modest house surrounded by pine trees.

She was seventy-two and walked with a cane.

The moment she saw Marcus, she began to cry.

“You have your father’s eyes.”

“What happened to him?”

Margaret invited him inside.

For an hour, she described Arthur’s final weeks.

He had been ill, but lucid.

He wanted to revise the family trust because he no longer trusted Celeste’s obsession with corporate control.

“He was afraid of her,” Margaret said.

“My father was not afraid of anyone.”

“He was afraid of what she would do after he was gone.”

Margaret revealed that Arthur had planned to give Marcus full control of his own marriage, children and inheritance. Celeste would retain money, but no authority over future heirs.

The night before Arthur was scheduled to meet his attorney, Dr. Lang administered an unscheduled injection.

“What was in it?” Marcus asked.

“I don’t know. But your father became unconscious within minutes.”

“Did he wake again?”

“Briefly.”

Margaret opened a locked drawer and removed an old digital recorder.

“He asked me to keep this.”

Marcus pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then his father’s weak voice emerged.

Marcus, if you are hearing this, your mother has gone too far. Do not let the company turn you into something cold. Wealth is useful only when it protects the people you love. If you ever have a wife or child, choose them before the Thorne name. I failed to do that for too long.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Peter and Celeste are changing the trust. I did not approve it. Find Samuel Grant. He has the original documents.

Marcus looked at Margaret.

“Samuel Grant?”

“He was your father’s attorney.”

The name sounded familiar.

Then Marcus realized why.

Samuel Grant was Naomi’s late father.

When Marcus returned to the hospital, Naomi was waiting.

She listened to the recording without interruption.

“My father died in a car accident five years ago,” she said.

Marcus studied her.

“You think it was connected?”

“I don’t know.”

Naomi retrieved a key from a chain around her neck.

“My father left me a safe-deposit box. He told me never to open it unless a member of the Thorne family came asking about Arthur’s final trust.”

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew?”

“I knew there was a secret. I did not know what it was.”

The box contained Arthur’s original trust, personal letters and copies of payments from Celeste to Dr. Lang.

There was also a sealed statement signed by Arthur two days before his death.

The document declared that Celeste had pressured him to create a succession plan controlling any future grandchild.

He had refused.

The amendment Celeste later enforced was fraudulent.

Naomi looked at Marcus.

“This proves your mother’s entire claim over Elias was built on a forgery.”

Marcus felt relief, followed by rage.

“What about my father’s death?”

“It proves motive and fraud. Not murder.”

Dr. Lang finally agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

He admitted administering a sedative to Arthur without proper authorization.

But he insisted the dosage was not fatal.

“Celeste wanted him unconscious long enough to miss the meeting with his attorney,” Lang said. “His heart failed unexpectedly.”

“Did she call for help?” Marcus asked.

Lang looked down.

“Not immediately.”

“How long did she wait?”

“Seventeen minutes.”

Marcus went completely still.

Seventeen minutes.

His mother had watched Arthur struggle to breathe and waited because saving him might expose the forged trust.

Celeste was arrested the following morning.

News helicopters circled the Thorne estate as police escorted her outside.

She did not look ashamed.

She looked offended.

At the hospital, Khloe watched the arrest on television while holding Elias against her chest for the first time.

Marcus entered quietly.

She looked up.

“You found the truth.”

“Yes.”

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

It was the most honest answer he could give.

Khloe shifted carefully in the chair.

Marcus approached the incubator but did not touch Elias without permission.

“My father tried to warn me,” he said.

“You couldn’t have known.”

“I should have questioned more.”

“You were grieving.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I used work to avoid grief. Then I used Isabella to avoid the problems in our marriage. I have spent my life escaping anything that required me to feel ashamed.”

Khloe lowered her eyes to Elias.

“What will you do now?”

“Testify against my mother.”

“That will destroy the Thorne name.”

“It needs to be destroyed if this is what it represents.”

Khloe studied him for a long moment.

Then she adjusted the blanket around Elias.

“Would you like to hold your son?”

Marcus stopped breathing.

Khloe carefully transferred the tiny baby into his arms.

Marcus held Elias as if the entire world had been placed against his chest.

The baby opened his eyes for one brief second.

Marcus began to cry.

Khloe watched him.

For the first time since the affair, she did not see the billionaire who had lied to her.

She saw a frightened new father trying to become worthy of his child.

But outside the neonatal room, Naomi had just received a message from the district attorney.

Isabella had offered prosecutors a deal.

In exchange for a reduced sentence, she would testify against Celeste.

May you like

There was only one condition.

She wanted to tell Khloe the final secret herself.
