Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE IN DARKNESS

The secured residence went black at 9:17 p.m.
Emergency lights should have activated immediately.
They did not.
Khloe sat upright in bed as the fetal monitor beside her went silent.
“Naomi?”
“I’m here.”
Naomi switched on her phone flashlight.
Outside the bedroom, one of the private nurses called for the backup generator.
No one answered.
Khloe placed both hands over her belly.
The baby moved once.
Then stopped.
Naomi opened the door.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Khloe—”
“I am not staying alone in a dark room.”
Together, they moved into the hallway.
At the bottom of the staircase, a shadow passed across the front windows.
Naomi immediately locked the bedroom door behind them and dialed emergency services.
“There’s an intruder on the property.”
A crashing sound came from downstairs.
Khloe flinched.
Naomi pulled a small emergency alarm from her bag and pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
“The security system is down too.”
Footsteps moved through the first floor.
Slow.
Unhurried.
Khloe remembered Isabella standing over her in the hospital.
Smile for the cameras, have the baby, and disappear.
The bedroom door handle turned.
Naomi grabbed a heavy lamp.
“Get behind me.”
A man’s voice came through the door.
“Mrs. Thorne, I only want to talk.”
Khloe recognized it from old family gatherings.
Dr. Peter Lang.
“You forged my signature,” she called out.
“I was following instructions.”
“Whose?”
“Open the door.”
“No.”
The handle stopped moving.
Then the door shook under a heavy blow.
Naomi positioned herself between Khloe and the entrance.
Another blow splintered the frame.
Khloe looked toward the balcony.
They were on the second floor. The drop was too dangerous.
A third strike cracked the door.
Then a different sound erupted downstairs.
A body hitting the wall.
Men shouting.
The struggle lasted less than fifteen seconds.
Silence followed.
Khloe held her breath.
The damaged door opened.
Marcus stood there.
His tuxedo-perfect appearance was gone. His shirt was untucked, his knuckles were bleeding and rainwater ran from his hair onto his collar.
Behind him, Daniel and two police officers restrained Dr. Lang on the floor.
Marcus stopped when he saw Khloe.
He did not approach.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“The baby?”
“I don’t know. The monitor lost power.”
Dr. Park’s emergency team arrived minutes later.
The baby’s heartbeat returned, strong but elevated.
Khloe was transferred to the hospital as a precaution.
Dr. Lang was arrested.
During questioning, he admitted that the forged documents were part of a plan to gain control over the Thorne heir.
But he insisted Celeste had not ordered the break-in.
“Then who did?” Daniel asked.
Lang stared through the interview-room glass.
“Isabella.”
She had been released on bail that afternoon.
Her passport had been surrendered, but her family’s influence had secured home confinement instead of jail.
Lang claimed Isabella had panicked after learning Marcus had removed Celeste from the company. She believed Khloe would expose everything and permanently destroy the Rossi family.
“What were you supposed to do at the house?” Marcus demanded.
Lang rubbed his wrists against the handcuffs.
“Give Khloe medication.”
“What kind?”
“A sedative.”
“She is seven months pregnant.”
“The dose was supposed to be safe.”
“Supposed to be?”
Lang looked away.
Marcus slammed both hands onto the table.
“What happened after she was sedated?”
Lang swallowed.
“I was supposed to place prescription bottles in her room and call an ambulance. The report would suggest she had taken them herself.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“And the baby?”
“If the child survived, Celeste would be named temporary guardian under the forged authorization.”
Marcus stared at the doctor.
“And if the baby didn’t survive?”
Lang did not answer.
Marcus lunged across the table.
Daniel caught him before he reached the doctor.
“Sir.”
Marcus fought against him for one second, then forced himself back.
“Where is Isabella?”
Lang smiled weakly.
“You think she tells me everything?”
Police searched the Rossi estate.
Isabella was gone.
Her electronic ankle monitor had been cut off and left beside the swimming pool.
Vittorio Rossi claimed he had no idea where she was.
No one believed him.
Khloe was moved to a guarded hospital wing.
Marcus sat outside her room through the night.
At three in the morning, Naomi stepped into the hallway.
“She wants to see you.”
Marcus entered.
Khloe rested against the pillows, exhausted but awake.
“You came to the house,” she said.
“Yes.”
“How did you arrive before the police?”
“Daniel traced Lang’s phone. We were already on the way.”
“You could have been killed.”
“So could you.”
Khloe looked at his injured hand.
“Did you hit him?”
“Yes.”
“That was stupid.”
“Yes.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Marcus remained near the door.
Khloe studied him.
“You’re waiting for permission to come closer.”
“I should have learned to do that years ago.”
Her eyes lowered.
“I don’t forgive you.”
“I know.”
“But you saved us tonight.”
“I helped stop a danger I helped create.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
Marcus glanced toward the fetal monitor.
The steady heartbeat filled the room.
“I’ll stay outside,” he said.
As he turned, Khloe spoke.
“Marcus.”
He looked back.
“You can sit in the chair.”
He stared at the chair beside the far wall.
Not beside the bed.
But inside the room.
It was not forgiveness.
It was not trust.
It was only permission to remain.
To Marcus, it felt like the first honest gift he had received in years.
He sat down.
Khloe closed her eyes.
Hours later, Marcus woke to the sound of an alarm.
Khloe had one hand pressed against her stomach.
The monitor flashed red.
Dr. Park rushed into the room.
“What are you feeling?”
Khloe gasped.
“Pressure. Something is wrong.”
The doctor pulled back the blanket.
Her face changed immediately.
“She’s in premature labor.”
Marcus stood frozen.
Dr. Park shouted for the delivery team.
Khloe reached for the bed rail, terrified.
Then, without looking at him, she stretched out her other hand.
May you like
Marcus took it.
And this time, she did not pull away.
