Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The conference room of Bennett Development was silent.

Twelve board members sat around the massive glass table, their faces grim. At the head of the table sat Claire, with Arthur Vance at her right hand.

Daniel stood at the opposite end, refusing to sit. He had spent the last three days trying to convince his old allies on the board to stand with him, but the viral video and the allegations of financial fraud had made him toxic.

“This is an outrage!” Daniel yelled, slamming his hand on the table. “You’re letting an emotional, vindictive woman destroy a multi-million-dollar corporation because of a personal marital dispute! I am the face of this company! The developers trust me! The unions trust me!”

One of the senior board members, a gray-haired man named Harold who had known Daniel for twenty years, sighed and leaned forward.

“Daniel, we’ve seen the audit reports,” Harold said, his voice heavy. “You didn't just use corporate funds to buy your mistress a condo. You used company money to fund her entire interior design firm. You labeled her expenses as ‘consulting fees’ for projects that don’t even exist. That’s fraud.”

“It was an investment!” Daniel protested.

“It was theft,” Claire corrected.

She stood up, leaning her hands on the table. The board members turned to her, their expressions shifting from skepticism to respect.

“For twenty years, you told everyone who would listen that I was just a housewife,” Claire said, looking directly at Daniel. “But while you were out at expensive lunches and charity galas with Madison, I was the one who managed the risk assessments for our bids. I know every project manager, every subcontractor, and every union representative by their first name. They don't work with Bennett Development because of your face, Daniel. They work with us because our invoices are paid on time and our contracts are legally sound. And I am the one who kept them that way.”

She turned to the board.

“I am proposing a vote of no confidence against Daniel Bennett,” Claire declared. “Under Article 6 of the bylaws, I am voting my fifty-one percent share to remove him from his position as CEO and President, effective immediately. I will assume the role of interim CEO until a permanent replacement can be found.”

The VoteThe room was silent as the board members looked at each other.

“I second the motion,” Harold said.

“All in favor?” Arthur Vance called out.

Every single hand around the table went up.

Daniel stared at them, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and pure, unadulterated rage. “Harold... you’re turning on me? After everything we’ve done?”

“You brought this on yourself, Daniel,” Harold said, refusing to look him in the eye. “You should have kept your private life private. But more than that, you shouldn't have stolen from the company.”

“Get out of my office, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice cold and final. “Security is waiting downstairs to escort you out of the building. Your personal belongings will be couriered to your hotel tomorrow.”

Daniel turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the glass door so hard that a tiny crack spider-webbed across the corner.

The BreakdownBack at the Drake Hotel, Madison was waiting for him. She was surrounded by half-unpacked boxes and shopping bags from luxury boutiques, but her expression was anything but happy.

“Well?” she demanded as Daniel walked through the door, his tie loose, his suit jacket wrinkled. “Did you fix it? Did you get the accounts unfrozen?”

“She took the company, Madison,” Daniel said, his voice hollow as he collapsed onto the sofa. “They voted me out. The board... they all turned on me. Every single one of them.”

Madison froze. Her hand slowly dropped from her designer sunglasses.

“What do you mean, they voted you out?” she asked, her voice rising in panic. “You’re the owner! You’re the billionaire!”

“I’m not a billionaire,” Daniel muttered, staring at the floor. “The trust controls the assets. And with the audit... they’re going to freeze my personal accounts too. I don't have access to the corporate credit cards anymore.”

Madison’s face underwent a dramatic transformation. The sweet, adoring expression she had used to captivate him for the last year vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating look of disgust.

“So... you don't have any money?” she asked.

“Not right now,” Daniel said. “But we’ll fight it! My lawyers—”

“I don't have time for a legal battle, Daniel,” Madison interrupted, walking over to her suitcase and slamming it shut. “I have a business to run. And I cannot be associated with a man who is being investigated for corporate fraud. It’s bad for my brand.”

Daniel stared at her, horrified. “Madison... what are you saying? I did all of this for you! I bought you that condo! I gave you the jewelry!”

“And now you’re broke,” Madison said coldly, pulling her suitcase toward the door. “Have a nice life, Daniel. Tell your wife she can have her necklace back. It was tacky anyway.”

With a sharp click of her heels, she walked out of the room, leaving Daniel Bennett alone in the quiet luxury of a hotel room he could no longer afford.
