Chapter 2 - The Backlash and the Public Exposure

The rain didn't stop.
By midnight, Daniel and Madison were sitting in the lobby of the Drake Hotel, surrounded by four quickly packed suitcases. The luxury hotel was elegant, but to Daniel, it felt like a gilded holding cell.
His phone was buzzing incessantly. He had tried to call his CFO, his lead developers, and his PR representative, but it was past midnight on a Thursday. No one was answering.
“I can’t believe you let her do that,” Madison hissed, her voice dripping with venom as she adjusted her silk scarf. “You told me she was a simple housewife, Daniel! You told me she was meek! She threatened to call the police! Do you know what that would do to my reputation? My interior design business relies on high-society clients!”
“Shut up, Madison,” Daniel snapped, rubbing his temples. “She doesn't have the power she thinks she has. Tomorrow morning, I’m meeting with my legal team. We’re going to freeze every account she has access to. She won't be able to buy a gallon of milk by noon.”
The First StrikeAt 8:00 AM the next morning, Daniel marched into the offices of Bennett Development. He expected his secretary, Sarah, to greet him with his usual black coffee and a stack of daily reports.
Instead, he found two security guards standing outside his private office.
“Mr. Bennett,” one of the guards said, stepping forward. “We’ve been instructed not to allow you into the executive suite.”
“Are you out of your mind?” Daniel roared. “I built this building! I pay your salary! Move out of my way!”
“Actually, they don't,” a calm voice called out from the end of the hallway.
Daniel spun around to see Claire walking toward him. She wasn't wearing her usual casual house clothes. She was dressed in a pristine, tailored charcoal pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sharp, professional chignon. Beside her was Arthur Vance, one of the most formidable corporate litigators in Chicago.
“Claire,” Daniel gasped, stepping back. “What is the meaning of this?”
“Daniel Bennett,” Arthur Vance said, stepping forward and handing him a thick packet of legal documents. “As of 7:30 AM today, a special meeting of the majority shareholders of Bennett Development was convened. Under Section 4.2 of the operating agreement, Claire Bennett, as sole trustee of the Bennett Family Trust, has voted to suspend you from your duties as CEO, pending an independent audit of the company’s accounts.”
“You can’t do this!” Daniel yelled, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple. “This is a coup!”
“It’s not a coup, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice echoing down the marble hallway. “It’s an audit. Over the last six months, I’ve noticed some... discrepancies in our corporate accounts. Specifically, a three-million-dollar wire transfer to a shell company registered in Delaware—the same shell company that purchased a luxury penthouse on Michigan Avenue last month. The same penthouse Madison Cole has been decorating.”
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. He looked at his wife, realizing for the first time that while he had been playing games, she had been keeping score.
“You’re embezzling corporate funds to support your mistress, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice dropping to a whisper that cut through him. “That’s a federal crime. If you don’t leave this building peacefully, Arthur’s associate will deliver these files directly to the SEC.”
The Twins’ Counter-AttackWhile Claire was securing the company, Noah and Emma were conducting their own campaign at school.
The Bennett twins attended a prestigious private academy in the suburbs of Chicago, where reputation was everything. Daniel had spent years cultivating an image of a perfect, philanthropic family man. He was on the school’s board of trustees and had recently pledged a million-dollar donation for a new athletic complex.
During lunch, Emma sat at her laptop in the library, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
“Are you sure about this?” Noah asked, leaning over her shoulder.
“He let Mrs. Alvarez take the blame for his theft,” Emma said, her jaw tight. “He humiliated Mom in our own home. He deserves everything that’s coming.”
With a single click, Emma uploaded a video to the school’s private parent-student network and her personal social media accounts.
The Video: A compilation of security camera footage from their home.
The Content:

By 2:00 PM, Daniel’s phone was ringing so much it began to overheat. The board of the academy called an emergency meeting. The parents of their classmates were openly posting messages of disgust, calling for Daniel’s resignation from the board of trustees.
