Chapter 6 - The Fall and the Begging

"Grace, please," Caleb said, stepping forward, his voice cracking with genuine emotion. "I am so incredibly sorry. I was blind. I was foolish. I let the pressure of the merger get the best of me, but that is no excuse. I should have never let her treat you, or Lily, that way."
"Oh, please, Caleb! Don't beg this servant!" Sloane screamed, losing her mind as she saw her gilded future slipping away. "She's doing this to humiliate us! She's nothing but—"
"Arthur," Grace interrupted calmly. "Show them."
Arthur tapped his tablet, and a massive screen on the wall came to life. It displayed financial ledger after financial ledger, detailing secret bank accounts, wire transfers, and confidential emails.
"For the past six months, Ms. Mercer has been embezzling funds from Westbrook Industries' charitable foundation," Arthur explained. "Furthermore, we have record of her selling proprietary Westbrook trade secrets to your primary competitor, Apex Tech, in exchange for a secret offshore account worth twelve million dollars."
Caleb turned to Sloane, his eyes blazing with fury. "Is this true?"
"Caleb, no! It's a setup! She's lying!" Sloane stammered, backing away.
"The FBI has already been notified, Ms. Mercer," Arthur said calmly. "They are waiting downstairs."
Two security guards stepped into the room, grabbing Sloane by her arms. She screamed, kicking and cursing, her carefully cultivated veneer of high-society elegance shattering into ugly, desperate hysterics as she was dragged out of the boardroom.
Silence fell over the room.
Caleb stood alone, looking like a man who had survived a shipwreck only to find himself stranded in a barren desert. He looked at Grace.
"I don't care about the company, Grace," Caleb said quietly, his shoulders slumped. He walked over to the table and picked up the gold-wrapped package. With trembling fingers, he carefully peeled back the tape, preserving the gold foil Lily had wrapped with so much love.
Inside was a beautiful, hand-bound leather journal. On the first page, there was a child’s crayon drawing of Caleb holding Lily’s hand, with the words: To the man who saved my mommy, thank you.
Caleb’s eyes filled with tears. He sank to his knees, not before Grace, but before the three-year-old girl.
"Lily," Caleb said, his voice trembling as he held up the journal. "This is the most beautiful gift I have ever received. I am so, so sorry I didn't take it the first time. Can you ever forgive me?"
Lily looked at her mother. Grace watched Caleb, her cold gaze softening just a fraction as she saw the genuine, raw remorse in his eyes. He wasn't acting for the cameras or trying to save his billions. He was a broken man, realizing the true value of what he had almost discarded.
Grace gently nodded to her daughter.
Lily walked over, her small hand reaching out to touch Caleb's wet cheek. "Don't cry, Mr. Caleb. You can write your stories in it now."
Caleb let out a shaky sob, pressing his forehead against Lily's small hand.

Grace stood up, walking over to stand beside them. "You have a lot of work to do, Caleb. You have to rebuild your company, and more importantly, you have to rebuild your soul."
"Let me," Caleb begged, looking up at Grace. "Please, let me try."
