Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the Heiress

The rain began to pour as Grace packed their few belongings into two battered suitcases. The Westbrook staff quarters were quiet, save for Lily’s soft, exhausted whimpers as she slept on the small cot.
Grace stood by the window, looking out at the sprawling, multi-acre estate. She pulled a burner phone from the bottom of her suitcase—an item she had kept hidden for four long years. She dialed a number she knew by heart.
The phone rang only once before a deep, authoritative voice answered.
"Yes?"
"Arthur," Grace said quietly.
There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. The sound of rustling papers ceased. "Grace? My God... Grace, is that really you?"
"It’s me, Arthur."
"Where have you been? Your grandfather has been beside himself! We’ve had private investigators on three continents looking for you. Why did you disappear?"
"I needed to know if I could survive on my own, Arthur. I needed to raise Lily away from the poison of the Vance family name, away from the media, and away from the people who saw my daughter as nothing but a bargaining chip for a corporate merger." Grace’s voice was steady, devoid of the hesitation she had worn like armor for years. "But I was wrong. The world is cruel to those who have nothing. And I will not let my daughter suffer for my pride."
Arthur, the chief legal counsel and trustee of Vance Global—a conglomerate that made Caleb Westbrook’s tech empire look like a neighborhood start-up—sighed with immense relief. "What do you want us to do, Grace? Your grandfather passed away six months ago. You are the sole heir to the Vance estate. The entire board is waiting for your return. You control over forty billion dollars in assets."
Grace looked at her sleeping daughter. She remembered the sight of Lily's gold-wrapped package lying in the trash, and the arrogant, dismissive smirk on Sloane Mercer's face.
"I want to come home, Arthur," Grace said, her voice hardening like tempered steel. "And I want to initiate a full market acquisition."
"Of which company, ma'am?"
"Westbrook Industries."
There was a brief pause on the line. "Caleb Westbrook? His firm is currently preparing for a major public offering. They are highly leveraged, but their proprietary software patent is incredibly valuable. Acquiring them won't be cheap."
Grace smiled, a cold, sharp expression that would have terrified Sloane Mercer. "They don't own that patent, Arthur. I do."
"What?"
"Four years ago, before I left, I wrote the foundational code for their entire automated infrastructure under my mother's maiden name—Miller. I licensed it to Westbrook's shell company through an anonymous trust. I want that license revoked immediately for breach of ethical conduct clauses."

Arthur laughed, a rich, dark sound. "Consider it done, Chairwoman. When do you want to begin?"
"Tonight," Grace said, pulling her coat over her shoulders and gently lifting Lily into her arms. "Let’s show them what happens when they throw away the help."
