Chapter 4 - The Crumbling Empire

One week later, the atmosphere inside the executive offices of Westbrook Industries was thick with panic.

Caleb Westbrook stared at the financial terminal on his desk, his eyes bloodshot and his tie undone. The glowing red numbers on the screen painted a devastating picture.

"What do you mean, our credit lines are frozen?" Caleb roared, slamming his fist on the mahogany desk.

His CFO, a pale man sweating through his expensive suit, trembled. "Vance Global, sir. They’ve quietly bought up forty-two percent of our outstanding debt over the last forty-eight hours. They are calling in the loans immediately. And that's not the worst of it."

"How could it possibly get worse?"

"The anonymous trust that owns our core automation patent—the very software our upcoming IPO is built on—has filed a federal injunction. They are claiming we violated the ethical licensing terms by harboring executive staff who engage in human rights and workplace harassment violations. They’ve suspended our license pending a full investigation."

Caleb fell back into his leather chair, stunned. Without that software, Westbrook Industries was a hollow shell. "Who is behind Vance Global? Who is their chairperson?"

"Nobody knows, sir. The founder passed away recently, and the sole heir has just stepped out of the shadows to take the reins. We've requested an emergency meeting, but they've ignored all our inquiries."

The door to the office burst open, and Sloane walked in, looking frantic despite her Chanel suit. "Caleb! What is going on? My credit cards were declined at the boutique! The bank says our joint accounts are under audit!"

Caleb looked up at his fiancée, a sudden, deep sense of irritation washing over him. Over the past week, since the night of his birthday gala, the estate had fallen into disarray. The new housekeepers Sloane had hired were incompetent, the food was terrible, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of his home had evaporated. More than that, he had been haunted by the memory of little Lily’s tear-stained face.

"Sloane, not now," Caleb muttered, rubbing his temples.

"What do you mean, 'not now'?" Sloane hissed, crossing her arms. "Our engagement party is in two weeks! The media is watching! You need to fix this financial glitch immediately!"

At that moment, Caleb's desk phone rang. He snatched it up. "Westbrook."

"Mr. Westbrook," his secretary's voice crackled through the speaker, sounding breathless. "The legal counsel for Vance Global is on the line. They've agreed to an emergency meeting."

Caleb stood up straight, hope flare-igniting in his chest. "Put them through."

"Mr. Westbrook," a crisp, professional voice said. "My name is Arthur Pendelton, representing Vance Global. My client is willing to meet with you to discuss a total buyout of Westbrook Industries. However, she has two conditions."

"Name them," Caleb said desperately.

"First, the meeting will take place at our corporate headquarters in Manhattan, in two hours. Second, you must bring your fiancée, Ms. Sloane Mercer, with you."

Caleb frowned, glancing at Sloane. "Why Ms. Mercer?"

May you like

"My client was very specific about that, Mr. Westbrook. If she is not present, there is no deal, and we will proceed with the immediate foreclosure of your company."

"We'll be there," Caleb said.
