Chapter 4: The Chairman's Last Move

Chapter 4: The Chairman's Last Move

Detective Samuel Brooks couldn't believe what he was seeing.

He looked at the photograph once.

Then twice.

The smiling face staring back at him belonged to Attorney General Victor Langford, the man who had publicly promised to uncover Arthur Sterling's killer and restore justice.

Mrs. Eleanor Gable stepped backward, her legs trembling.

"No..."

Brooks slowly closed the journal.

"If Arthur was right..."

Mrs. Gable finished his sentence.

"...then the man leading the investigation has been controlling it from the beginning."

Emily looked between them.

"Is he a bad man?"

Brooks knelt beside her.

"I'm afraid he is."

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

If Arthur's journal was authentic, then every witness, every piece of evidence, every arrest, and every accusation over the past three weeks could have been manipulated.

Mrs. Gable whispered,

"Arthur never stood a chance."

Brooks carefully copied every file from Arthur's underground servers onto three encrypted drives.

One stayed in his pocket.

One he handed to Mrs. Gable.

The third he gave to Emily.

The little girl looked confused.

"Why me?"

"Because," Brooks said softly, "if something happens to us, you're the last person they'll expect."

Emily nodded seriously and slipped the tiny drive into the pocket of her cartoon pajamas beside the pink toy phone.

Back above ground, the Sterling Estate was surrounded by police officers.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Brooks deliberately told no one about the underground vault.

Not even the officers waiting outside.

As they walked toward their vehicles, a young deputy hurried over.

"Detective Brooks."

"What is it?"

"Attorney General Langford is on his way."

Brooks' heart skipped a beat.

"How long?"

"Fifteen minutes."

Brooks forced himself to remain calm.

"Good."

The deputy looked surprised.

"You wanted him here?"

Brooks smiled faintly.

"I want to see his face."

Exactly fifteen minutes later, a convoy of black government SUVs rolled through the estate gates.

Victor Langford stepped out wearing a navy suit and an expression of perfect concern.

He shook Brooks' hand.

"Detective."

"Attorney General."

"I came as soon as I heard."

Brooks watched him carefully.

Langford's eyes briefly drifted toward Emily.

Just one second.

But it was enough.

The warmth disappeared from his smile.

There it was.

Recognition.

Arthur had been telling the truth.

Langford already knew who Emily was.

"I understand you've found new evidence," Langford said.

"We've found a few interesting things."

"I'll need everything."

"Of course."

Brooks deliberately handed him an empty evidence folder.

Langford opened it.

Inside were meaningless financial statements from public company records.

Nothing important.

Langford flipped through them without changing expression.

"Excellent work."

But Brooks noticed one tiny detail.

Langford looked disappointed.

He had expected much more.

That evening, Brooks secretly arranged a meeting with Captain Reynolds.

The meeting place was an abandoned railway station outside the city.

Rain poured from dark clouds as Brooks arrived alone.

Captain Reynolds stepped from the shadows.

His face was bruised.

"They tried to kill me."

"I know."

"They've infiltrated every level."

"How bad?"

Reynolds hesitated.

"Worse than you think."

He pulled a folded document from his jacket.

"This is a list of officers I still trust."

Brooks counted only six names.

"That's all?"

Reynolds nodded.

"The rest..."

He couldn't finish.

Brooks understood.

The conspiracy had spread through the justice system like poison.

Meanwhile, Langford sat inside his private office overlooking the city skyline.

The room was empty except for one elderly man.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Expensive black gloves.

He had never been photographed.

Never appeared in public.

People within the organization called him only one thing.

The Chairman.

Langford lowered his head respectfully.

"They found the vault."

The old man remained calm.

"And?"

"They copied everything."

The Chairman slowly smiled.

"Arthur expected that."

Langford frowned.

"You knew?"

"Of course."

"Then why let him keep collecting evidence for fifteen years?"

The Chairman walked toward the window.

"Because Arthur was never the real target."

Langford looked confused.

"Then who was?"

The Chairman turned.

"The child."

Across town, Emily finally fell asleep on the couch in Brooks' safe house.

Mrs. Gable gently covered her with a blanket.

The pink toy phone slipped from Emily's hand onto the cushion.

As Mrs. Gable picked it up, she noticed something strange.

The battery compartment seemed unusually thick.

She pressed against the plastic.

Click.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was another memory card.

Mrs. Gable's eyes widened.

"Sam..."

Brooks hurried over.

"What happened?"

She handed him the tiny card.

"There was another compartment."

Brooks immediately inserted it into his laptop.

One video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

He clicked play.

Arthur Sterling appeared on screen.

He looked tired.

Older than anyone remembered.

"If you're watching this..."

He smiled sadly.

"...then Emily is still alive."

Mrs. Gable burst into tears.

Arthur continued.

"The recording inside the phone was only meant to buy you time."

Brooks leaned closer.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur answered as though he could hear him.

"The real evidence was never in the vault."

Everyone froze.

"The vault was designed to distract The Chairman."

Brooks stared at the screen.

Arthur smiled faintly.

"If you're seeing this, then he has already taken the bait."

Mrs. Gable whispered,

"Arthur..."

Arthur continued.

"The evidence capable of destroying the organization has been hidden somewhere no one would ever search."

Emily stirred in her sleep.

Almost as though she sensed Arthur's voice.

"The key is something Emily has carried since the day I rescued her."

The video suddenly ended.

Brooks looked at Mrs. Gable.

"What has she carried every day?"

Mrs. Gable looked at the sleeping child.

Her pajamas.

The toy phone.

The memory card.

Then her eyes fell upon the small silver necklace Emily always wore around her neck.

A tiny angel pendant.

Mrs. Gable whispered,

"The necklace."

Before anyone could examine it—

Every screen inside the cabin went black.

Then a single message appeared in white letters.

YOU FOUND THE WRONG SECRET.

Brooks reached for his pistol.

The lights began flashing.

Outside...

Helicopter blades thundered overhead.

Not police helicopters.

Military helicopters.

Three black aircraft circled the cabin.

Vehicles surrounded every road.

Loudspeakers echoed through the night.

"Detective Samuel Brooks."

"This property is surrounded."

"Surrender the child immediately."

Mrs. Gable looked out the window.

"There are dozens of them."

Brooks counted quickly.

Not dozens.

Hundreds.

Whoever had come wasn't trying to arrest Emily.

They were preparing to erase everyone inside the cabin forever.

He looked toward the little girl.

Still asleep.

Still wearing the silver angel necklace Arthur had given her years ago.

Brooks suddenly realized something.

Arthur had never said Emily owned the evidence.

He had said she had carried it.

Which meant the evidence wasn't beside her.

It wasn't hidden in the toy phone.

It wasn't inside the vault.

It had been with her...

Every single day...

For years.

And if Brooks was right...

The tiny silver angel hanging around Emily's neck wasn't a necklace at all.

It was a key.

A key to something so dangerous that Arthur Sterling had been willing to sacrifice his own life to keep it hidden.

Outside, the first armored vehicle rolled toward the cabin.

The final battle had begun.
