Chapter 3: The Vault of Truth

Chapter 3: The Vault of Truth

The black SUVs stopped fifty yards from the cabin.

Their engines fell silent.

No doors opened.

No voices echoed through the trees.

Only the wind whispered across the frozen lake.

Detective Samuel Brooks slowly lowered the curtain.

"They're waiting."

Mrs. Eleanor Gable stood beside the fireplace, holding Emily close.

"For what?"

Brooks checked the magazine in his pistol one last time.

"For us to make a mistake."

Emily looked out the window without fear.

"There are seven people."

Brooks frowned.

"You counted them?"

"I saw seven shadows."

He took another careful look.

She was right.

Seven.

Not six.

Someone had stepped out of the last vehicle without making a sound.

Professional.

Very professional.

A loud knock echoed through the cabin.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

Nobody moved.

Another knock.

This time a calm male voice spoke.

"Detective Brooks."

Brooks tightened his grip on the pistol.

"I know you're inside."

No answer.

"We don't want anyone else to get hurt."

Mrs. Gable whispered,

"They know your name."

Brooks nodded.

"They've known it for a long time."

The voice continued.

"We're authorized to take the child into federal protection."

Emily looked confused.

"I don't know him."

Brooks didn't either.

And that was exactly the problem.

He had never heard of any federal team arriving without advance notice.

Nor would they come without marked vehicles.

Something was terribly wrong.

Suddenly, Brooks' cell phone vibrated.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

He hesitated before answering.

"Brooks."

A weak voice replied.

"...Sam..."

His eyes widened.

"Captain Reynolds?"

Reynolds was his commanding officer.

The man sounded exhausted.

"Don't... trust... anyone..."

Static interrupted the call.

"They've infiltrated the department."

Gunfire exploded.

A scream echoed through the speaker.

Then...

The line went dead.

Brooks stared at the phone.

Mrs. Gable didn't need to ask.

She already knew.

The police had been compromised.

Outside, the man in the dark suit smiled.

He watched the cabin through a pair of binoculars.

"They're not coming out."

Another man approached.

"What now?"

"We force them."

He raised one hand.

Instantly, two men disappeared into the forest.

Brooks never saw them.

Inside the cabin, Emily suddenly turned toward the kitchen.

"They're behind us."

Brooks spun around.

"What?"

"They're not all in front."

Before he could react—

The kitchen window shattered.

A flash grenade rolled across the floor.

"Down!"

The explosion filled the cabin with blinding white light.

Brooks fired toward the broken window.

Mrs. Gable shielded Emily beneath the heavy dining table.

Boots pounded across the wooden floor.

Masked men rushed inside.

Brooks struck the first attacker with the butt of his pistol.

The second lunged at him.

The detective tackled him into the wall.

Furniture crashed.

Glass shattered.

Someone shouted,

"Take the girl!"

Emily crawled from beneath the table.

Not away from danger—

Toward the hallway.

She remembered something.

Months earlier...

Arthur Sterling had smiled while walking through the cabin.

"This place has another secret."

Emily laughed.

"Another one?"

Arthur winked.

"The safest hiding place is the one nobody believes exists."

He pressed a loose wooden panel beside the staircase.

A hidden door quietly opened.

"If bad people ever come..."

Emily finished the sentence.

"...I hide here."

Arthur smiled proudly.

"Exactly."

Back in the present...

Emily pushed the same wooden panel.

Click.

The hidden door opened.

She grabbed Mrs. Gable's hand.

"This way!"

Mrs. Gable looked astonished.

"There's another tunnel?"

"No."

Emily smiled.

"A room."

The two disappeared just as another masked man entered the hallway.

He looked around.

Empty.

They had vanished.

Meanwhile, Brooks fought desperately against two attackers.

A third aimed a pistol directly at him.

"Drop it."

Brooks slowly lowered his weapon.

The masked man stepped closer.

Then—

A rifle shot echoed from outside.

The gunman collapsed instantly.

Another shot.

A second attacker fell.

The remaining intruders scrambled for cover.

Brooks looked toward the trees.

Someone else had entered the fight.

Whoever it was...

They were an exceptional marksman.

Within seconds, four masked men retreated toward the SUVs.

The mysterious shooter never missed.

The man in the dark suit cursed.

"Fall back!"

The convoy disappeared into the night.

Leaving behind two wounded attackers.

And countless questions.

An hour later...

State police finally arrived.

Real officers.

Brooks immediately recognized several trusted colleagues.

Captain Reynolds, however, was missing.

No one knew where he was.

The surviving attackers refused to speak.

Neither carried identification.

Their fingerprints matched no criminal database.

It was as though they officially didn't exist.

Just before sunrise...

Brooks examined the memory card again.

This time he noticed something unusual.

Every folder contained the same tiny symbol.

A silver phoenix.

Mrs. Gable leaned closer.

"I've seen that before."

"Where?"

"Arthur's office."

Brooks looked up.

"Are you sure?"

"He kept a bronze statue of the same bird on his desk."

Emily quietly added,

"He always turned it before leaving."

Brooks froze.

"What did you say?"

"He twisted it."

Mrs. Gable's eyes widened.

"It wasn't decoration."

Brooks immediately understood.

"It was a key."

Three hours later, a heavily armed police team entered Arthur Sterling's office.

The room had already been searched dozens of times.

Nothing had been found.

Brooks walked straight to the bronze phoenix.

He gently turned it clockwise.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Counterclockwise.

A soft mechanical click echoed beneath the floor.

Everyone looked down.

The massive wooden bookshelf slowly slid aside.

Behind it stood an elevator.

Silent.

Hidden.

Untouched for years.

One detective whispered,

"How did we miss this?"

Brooks answered quietly.

"Because Arthur wanted us to."

The elevator descended nearly sixty feet underground.

When the doors opened...

Nobody spoke.

The room before them looked less like a vault and more like a command center.

Rows of computer servers blinked quietly.

Walls were covered with maps.

Photographs.

Financial charts.

Surveillance screens.

Thousands of neatly organized files filled steel cabinets.

Everything Arthur had secretly investigated was here.

Mrs. Gable's voice trembled.

"He spent years building this."

Brooks slowly nodded.

"He wasn't just a businessman."

"He was preparing for war."

In the center of the room stood one final safe.

Unlike everything else...

It required no combination.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Brooks sighed.

"It won't open."

Emily quietly stepped forward.

Arthur's final letter echoed inside her mind.

"If you ever find my sanctuary... don't be afraid."

She placed her tiny hand on the scanner.

Nothing happened.

Then...

A soft female voice filled the room.

Identity confirmed.

Everyone stared in disbelief.

The heavy safe door slowly unlocked.

Inside rested only three objects.

A black leather journal.

A gold pocket watch.

And an old photograph.

Emily picked up the photograph first.

It showed Arthur standing beside a young woman holding a newborn baby.

On the back were four handwritten words.

Our greatest miracle.

Mrs. Gable suddenly covered her mouth.

"No..."

Brooks looked at her.

"What is it?"

She pointed at the young woman.

"I know her."

"You do?"

"Her name was Sarah."

Emily looked up.

"You knew my mommy?"

Mrs. Gable's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

Emily stepped closer.

"Where is she?"

Mrs. Gable couldn't answer.

Instead, Brooks carefully opened the black journal.

The first page contained a single sentence.

If this journal has been opened, then the conspiracy has already reached its final stage.

He turned the page.

Arthur had documented everything.

Names.

Dates.

Secret meetings.

Bribes.

Murders disguised as accidents.

Corporate takeovers.

Political corruption.

Every page revealed another piece of a criminal empire stretching across the country.

Then Brooks reached the final entry.

His expression changed instantly.

Mrs. Gable noticed.

"What is it?"

He slowly looked up.

"The leader..."

"Who is it?"

Brooks swallowed.

"The journal says the entire organization answers to someone Arthur called..."

The Chairman.

Mrs. Gable frowned.

"Who is he?"

Brooks turned the page.

There was only one photograph attached.

Everyone leaned closer.

Emily's eyes widened.

Mrs. Gable gasped.

Brooks felt the blood drain from his face.

Because the man smiling in the photograph...

...was someone they all recognized.

Someone the entire country trusted.

Someone who had appeared on television only hours earlier, promising to help solve Arthur Sterling's murder.

And according to Arthur's journal...

May you like

...he was the mastermind behind every crime.
