Chapter 2: Beneath the Sterling Estate

Chapter 2: Beneath the Sterling Estate

The tunnel was colder than Emily remembered.

Moisture dripped from the stone ceiling, echoing through the darkness like a ticking clock. Detective Samuel Brooks swept his flashlight across the narrow passage while Mrs. Eleanor Gable stayed close behind Emily.

Above them, muffled voices shook the mansion.

"They're tearing the house apart," Brooks whispered.

Emily didn't answer.

She simply kept walking.

Every few steps, she glanced toward the walls, as though searching for familiar marks.

"You've really been here before," Brooks finally said.

Emily nodded.

"Mr. Arthur told me it was our secret place."

"How many times?"

"I don't know."

"Five?"

She shook her head.

"More."

Mrs. Gable exchanged a worried glance with Brooks.

Arthur Sterling had known this child far better than anyone had realized.

After nearly ten minutes, the passage widened into a circular chamber.

Dust covered everything.

Old wooden shelves lined the walls.

There were stacks of leather-bound journals, faded maps, antique filing cabinets, and dozens of cardboard boxes labeled only with years.

1998.

2004.

2011.

2018.

Brooks slowly turned in a circle.

"This wasn't built to hide."

Mrs. Gable looked around.

"It was built to remember."

Emily walked directly toward a heavy steel desk in the center of the room.

She climbed onto the chair and reached underneath the tabletop.

Click.

A hidden drawer slid open.

Inside rested a small silver key.

Brooks stared.

"How did you know?"

Emily shrugged.

"He always hid candy there."

Despite everything, Mrs. Gable smiled.

"That sounds like Arthur."

But beneath the key lay something far more important.

A small memory card.

Brooks carefully picked it up.

"No label."

"No markings."

Mrs. Gable frowned.

"Could that be the list?"

"Maybe."

Before Brooks could examine it further—

A loud metallic bang echoed through the tunnel behind them.

Someone had found the entrance.

"They're coming!" Mrs. Gable whispered.

Brooks shoved the memory card into his evidence pouch.

"We move. Now."

Emily pointed toward another tunnel branching from the chamber.

"This way."

"You know where it goes?"

"It comes out near the lake."

Brooks didn't waste another second.

The three hurried deeper underground as flashlights appeared behind them.

A voice shouted from the darkness.

"They're here!"

Another answered.

"Don't let the girl escape!"

Gunfire exploded through the tunnel.

Stone fragments burst from the walls.

Brooks pushed Emily behind a thick support column.

"Stay down!"

He returned two quick shots, forcing the attackers to take cover.

Mrs. Gable's hands trembled.

"Who are these people?"

Brooks kept his eyes on the tunnel.

"They're professionals."

"How do you know?"

"They're not shooting wildly."

Every bullet was carefully placed.

Every movement was coordinated.

Whoever wanted Emily had planned this for a long time.

They finally emerged into the cool night air near the estate's private lake.

Police vehicles were still parked outside the main gates.

Brooks grabbed his radio.

"This is Detective Brooks! We have armed suspects beneath the Sterling estate! Send every available unit!"

Static.

Then silence.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Mrs. Gable looked worried.

"No signal?"

Brooks stared at the radio.

"It was working five minutes ago."

Emily looked toward the trees.

"They're blocking it."

Brooks followed her gaze.

High above the forest stood a temporary communications jammer mounted on a utility pole.

Someone had prepared tonight's attack with military precision.

Far across the city...

Clara sat alone in a holding cell.

The television mounted on the wall showed nonstop coverage of the trial.

The headline read:

NEW EVIDENCE MAY CLEAR ELEANOR GABLE

Clara closed her eyes.

She had expected this possibility.

What she had not expected...

...was Emily.

A guard approached the cell.

"You have a visitor."

"My lawyer?"

The guard shook his head.

"No."

A tall man in an expensive charcoal suit entered the room.

His face remained expressionless.

Clara's confidence vanished.

"You..."

The man sat down.

"You failed."

"The recording shouldn't have existed."

"But it did."

"I destroyed every copy."

The man leaned forward.

"You forgot about the child."

Clara swallowed.

"What happens now?"

The man smiled coldly.

"Now we clean up every loose end."

"And Emily?"

His answer came without hesitation.

"She never reaches tomorrow."

Meanwhile, Brooks drove without headlights along an old service road.

Emily sat quietly in the back seat.

Still holding Arthur's letter.

Mrs. Gable finally broke the silence.

"Emily..."

"Yes?"

"What did Arthur ever tell you about your parents?"

The little girl looked out the window.

"He said they loved me."

"Did he ever say where they were?"

"No."

"What do you remember?"

Emily was silent for several seconds.

"I remember a fire."

Mrs. Gable froze.

"A fire?"

"I was very little."

"What else?"

"I remember somebody carrying me."

"Who?"

Emily frowned.

"I couldn't see."

"The smoke was too thick."

Brooks watched through the rearview mirror.

His instincts told him this wasn't an ordinary childhood memory.

It sounded like trauma.

Just before midnight, they arrived at one of Brooks' safest locations—a secluded lakeside cabin owned by his retired partner.

No one knew about it.

Or so he believed.

He locked every door.

Checked every window.

Loaded fresh magazines into his pistol.

Mrs. Gable noticed.

"You think they'll find us."

Brooks answered honestly.

"I think they're already looking."

Emily wandered into the small living room.

A fireplace stood against one wall.

Above it hung an old family photograph.

A smiling couple.

Two children.

A dog.

Emily stared at it for a long moment.

"They look happy."

Brooks nodded.

"They were."

"Were?"

"My partner lost them in a car accident years ago."

Emily gently touched the frame.

"I'm sorry."

Brooks looked away.

"So am I."

Unable to sleep, Brooks inserted the tiny memory card into his encrypted laptop.

The screen flickered.

One folder appeared.

STERLING ARCHIVE

His pulse quickened.

He opened it.

Thousands of files.

Financial records.

Encrypted emails.

Photographs.

Wire transfers.

Passport scans.

Secret contracts.

Some of the names made his blood run cold.

Cabinet ministers.

International investors.

Corporate CEOs.

Organized crime figures.

Every one of them connected by hidden payments stretching back fifteen years.

Mrs. Gable whispered,

"Arthur wasn't protecting a company..."

Brooks nodded grimly.

"He was collecting evidence against an empire."

Then another file caught his attention.

It was simply titled:

PROJECT GUARDIAN

He clicked it.

A single sentence appeared.

The child must survive at all costs.

Before he could read further—

Every light inside the cabin suddenly went out.

Outside...

Headlights slowly appeared through the trees.

One.

Then three.

Then six.

Black SUVs rolled silently toward the cabin.

Brooks looked through the window, his face hardening.

"They found us."

Emily instinctively reached for the pink toy phone.

Mrs. Gable whispered,

"How?"

Brooks answered with quiet disbelief.

"I never told anyone we were coming here."

Which meant only one thing.

Someone inside the investigation was betraying them.

And somewhere, hidden among the officers Brooks had trusted for years...

May you like

...was a traitor working for the people Arthur Sterling had spent his life trying to expose.
