Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the Wall

The declaration of protection changed everything between Bella and Silana.

The invisible barrier of employer and servant began to dissolve. Silana insisted that Bella join him for meals in the grand dining hall. He listened intently as she talked about her dreams of finishing nursing school, her eyes lighting up as she spoke about medical trauma care. In turn, Silana shared stories of his childhood in Sicily, opening up about parts of his life he had buried for decades.

A quiet, undeniable chemistry began to bloom between them—born from shared grief, mutual respect, and the innocent child who tied them together.

However, outside the high stone walls of the Moretti estate, a storm was brewing.

The Castellano crime family, sensing that Silana had grown soft or distracted, began making aggressive moves against Moretti territory. Shipping routes were hijacked, docks were burned, and whispers spread through the underworld that Don Moretti was keeping a secret woman and child hidden in his West Wing.

One rainy afternoon, while Silana was away in the city attending an emergency meeting with his capos, Bella sat in the estate's glass greenhouse with Leo.

The baby was crawling around on a soft picnic blanket, giggling as he chased a red rubber ball. Bella smiled, feeling a sense of peace she hadn't experienced in years.

Suddenly, Leo stopped. He looked toward the thick bushes lining the edge of the glass wall and pointed a tiny finger.

"Dada?" Leo babbled.

Bella frowned, standing up. "What is it, sweetie?"

She looked toward the glass wall. Through the rain-streaked panes, hidden among the shadows of the rhododendron bushes, stood a man in a wet hooded jacket.

The hood was pulled low, but as he stepped closer to the glass, the sunlight caught his face.

Bella’s heart stopped.

It was David.

He looked gaunt, desperate, and wild-eyed. He held a phone to his ear, staring straight at Bella through the reinforced glass, a twisted, pathetic grin on his face.

Bella snatched Leo off the blanket, backing away toward the heavy iron doors of the greenhouse. "David... get away from here! If the guards see you, they'll kill you!"

David pressed his hand against the outside of the glass, his lips moving frantically, though his voice was muffled by the heavy glass and rain.

Open the door, his lips spelled out. Open the door or I tell the Castellanos where you are.

Bella gasped. David wasn't here to save them or apologize. He had tracked her down to use her and Leo as leverage—a bargaining chip to trade to Silana's deadliest enemies to buy back his own freedom.

Before Bella could reach the greenhouse door, a shadow fell over the entrance.

Dominic stepped inside, his hand already resting on the butt of his concealed firearm. His sharp eyes immediately caught the movement outside the glass.

"Bella," Dominic said, his voice flat and calm. "Get behind me."

Outside, David realized he had been spotted. He turned and sprinted into the dense woods surrounding the estate perimeter. Dominic pulled his radio from his belt.

"Code Red," Dominic barked into the mic. "Intruder on the North Perimeter. Secure the East Wing. Tell the Boss David Miller just touched the grounds."
