Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

Three months passed.
The Vale syndicate underwent a massive restructuring. I systematically removed every corrupt officer tied to Silas, replacing them with young, honorable men who understood that loyalty to family came above greed. I pulled our operations out of messy, high-risk ventures and focused entirely on legitimate shipping, real estate, and international trade.
The dark mansion that had once felt like a tomb was transformed.
Elena completely redecorated the estate, filling the cold marble halls with warm light, soft carpets, and bright paintings. The grounds, which used to be guarded by grim men with heavy weapons, were now filled with the sound of laughter.
In the backyard, little Matteo was running across the lush green grass, holding his gray stuffed elephant in one hand while chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted for him.
Beside him ran little Emma.
I had officially adopted Emma into our family. She no longer wore faded dresses or stood barefoot on freezing pavement. She wore a beautiful yellow summer dress, her bright eyes filled with happiness and security. She had become Matteo’s older sister, protecting him and playing with him every single day.
I sat on the wide outdoor patio, wearing a simple linen shirt, sipping black coffee. Elena stepped out from the kitchen, holding a tray of freshly baked cookies, and sat down beside me.
She rested her head on my shoulder, wrapping her arm around mine as we watched the children play in the sunshine.

"It feels like a dream, Dominic," Elena whispered softly. "A year ago, I was hiding in a freezing rowhouse, terrified every time a car drove past."
I pulled her closer, pressing a long, tender kiss to her temple. "The nightmare is over, Elena. I promised you I would make this world safe for you and Matteo. I will spend the rest of my life keeping that promise."
