Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Marcus

That evening, the storm outside raged with fierce intensity. Rain lashed against the high arched windows of the grand library.

I sat in the heavy leather armchair by the fireplace, sipping hot tea, reading a book. Lily was fast asleep upstairs in her room, guarded by two elite security detail officers.

The heavy double doors of the library opened.

Alessandro walked in. He wore a dark wool overcoat drenched in rain, his dark hair slicked back. Behind him walked Marco, holding a thick manila folder.

Alessandro took off his wet coat, handing it to a servant, and walked directly over to my chair. He squatted down in front of me, taking my hands in his.

"Marco told me about the phone call today," Alessandro said, his voice deep and steady, searching my eyes for any sign of distress. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Alessandro," I said truthfully, reaching out to stroke his jaw. "I wasn't scared. I was just furious that he thought he could use Lily again."

Alessandro's eyes darkened with a cold, lethal pride. "You handled it like a true Moretti, Grace. But Marcus Miller’s game ends tonight."

Marco stepped forward, laying the manila folder on the coffee table. "We tracked the burner phone to a rundown motel near JFK airport. Marcus was preparing to board a flight to South America using a forged passport."

"Where is he now?" I asked quietly.

"He's currently in an interview room at the Port Authority police station," Alessandro said smoothly, a dark smile touching his lips. "I didn't have him killed, Grace."

I blinked in surprise. "You didn't?"

"No," Alessandro said, standing up. "A quick bullet in a dark alley was too merciful for a coward who put my wife and daughter in danger. Instead, I delivered a complete dossier of his financial crimes, tax evasion, and human trafficking connections to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Marco chuckled from the doorway. "Marcus Miller is facing thirty years in a federal maximum-security prison with no possibility of parole. And because of his debt to the Russian mob... he'll be spending those thirty years in a state facility surrounded by people who know exactly who he is."

I sat back in my chair, a profound, wave of absolute relief washing over me. Marcus wasn't just gone; he was locked away in a concrete box where he could never, ever threaten us again.

"Thank you, Alessandro," I whispered, tears of deep gratitude shimmering in my eyes.

Alessandro stepped close, extending his hand to pull me up from the chair. He pulled me tight against his chest, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin on top of my head.

"You never have to thank me for protecting what is ours, Grace," he murmured against my hair. "You and Lily are my life. Everything I own, everything I command, exists to serve and protect the two of you."

I buried my face in his chest, inhaling his scent of rain, cedarwood, and high-end cologne, feeling the steady, rhythmic thud of his powerful heart beneath my cheek.

The ghosts of my past were officially dead. The fear that had stalked my steps for years had been burned to ash.

And in its place grew an indestructible fortress of love, security, and family.
