Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

Two months passed.
Life as Grace Moretti was a surreal blend of unimaginable luxury and heavy, unspoken authority.
I no longer cleaned the estate. Instead, I worked alongside Marco and Alessandro’s legal team, managing the family’s philanthropic branch—redirecting millions of dollars of Moretti capital into women's shelters, orphanages, and community development across New York.
Lily flourished. She had her own playroom, a private tutor, and a golden retriever puppy named Major that Alessandro had surprised her with for her fourth birthday.
Our marriage, though born out of convenience and protection, had grown into something deeply passionate and real. We shared the master suite—not out of obligation, but out of a fierce, mutual desire that had blossomed between us. Every night, locked away in our fortified sanctuary, Alessandro was not a cold crime lord; he was a tender, devoted husband who held me close, chasing away the remnants of my past nightmares.
However, a phantom still lingered in the dark.
Marcus Miller. My ex-husband.
When Alessandro’s team had raided the Russian gambling den two months ago, Marcus had somehow escaped through a back fire exit before the guards could secure him. He had gone deep underground, hiding in the shadows of the city.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Alessandro was in lower Manhattan attending a high-level meeting with the city's five families, I was sitting in the estate's private glass gazebo with Lily, watching her paint watercolor flowers on a small easel.
Suddenly, my private cell phone rang. An unknown caller ID flashed on the screen.
I hesitated, then swiped the screen. "Hello?"
"Grace..." a raspy, desperate voice hissed through the speaker.
My blood ran cold. I recognized that voice instantly. "Marcus?"
"Grace, listen to me!" Marcus panicked, breathing heavily into the phone. "You have to help me! The people I owe money to... they're gonna kill me! I know you're living in that mobster's house now! Send me two hundred thousand dollars, or I'm going to the press! I'll tell the media that Alessandro Moretti kidnapped my daughter!"
A cold, fierce anger flared in my chest. Two months ago, this voice would have made me tremble in fear. But I was no longer the helpless, desperate girl scrubbing floors to pay rent.
I stood up from my chair, walking to the edge of the glass gazebo, my voice turning to pure ice.
"Listen to me very carefully, Marcus," I said, my tone carrying the exact same chilling authority I had learned from my husband. "You abandoned your daughter. You sold our address to hitmen. You are nothing to us."
"I’m her biological father, Grace!" Marcus shouted hysterically through the phone. "A judge will give me custody if I tell them you're married to a mafia boss!"
"You don't have a daughter anymore, Marcus," I said coldly. "Lily has been legally adopted by Alessandro Moretti. Her name is Lily Moretti now. And if you ever call this number again, or step within ten miles of my child... I won't even have to ask my husband to find you. I will personally hand your location to Marco Bianchi."
Silence fell over the line. Marcus gasped, shocked by the lethal transformation in the woman he had once easily manipulated.
"Now hang up," I commanded. "And run as far away from New York as you can."
I clicked the end-call button and immediately dialed Marco's direct line.
"Mrs. Moretti?" Marco answered on the first ring.
"Marcus Miller just called my private line from a burner phone," I said calmly. "Trace the signal tower. He’s somewhere in Queens."
"On it," Marco replied instantly, a cold grin audible in his voice. "We'll have him located within twenty minutes."
I hung up, taking a deep breath of the cool, rain-scented air. I looked over at Lily, who was happily painting a bright yellow sun on her paper, completely safe, completely oblivious to the trash trying to disrupt her world.

I walked back over, dropping to my knees beside her easel, wrapping my arm around her tiny shoulders.
The wolves could howl at the gates all they wanted. But this time, the queen had her own pack.
