Chapter 3 - The Fortress SuiteThe master suite of the Moretti estate was less of a bedroom and more of a fortified bunker masquerading as a five-star penthouse.

Located on the top floor of the mansion, it featured bulletproof reinforced glass windows, a private security console, a massive walk-in closet, and a master bathroom lined with imported black marble. A heavy steel door, painted to look like oak, could seal the entire suite off from the rest of the house at the touch of a button.

By eight o'clock that evening, Lily was fast asleep in the center of the massive king-sized bed, tucked beneath silk sheets, holding a plush teddy bear that Marco had surprisingly brought up from the estate's storage room.

I sat on the edge of the bed, staring out the reinforced window at the sprawling gardens below. Floodlights illuminated every square inch of the grounds. Armed guards walked the perimeter with Belgian Malinois attack dogs.

The bedroom door clicked open, and Alessandro walked in.

He had removed his suit jacket and shoulder holster. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing thick, corded muscle and intricate black ink tattoos stretching up his arms—symbols of the Moretti family crest, a roaring lion wrapped in thorns.

He carried a tray with a bowl of hot soup, fresh bread, and a glass of red wine.

"Eat," he said, placing the tray on the nightstand beside me.

"I'm not hungry, Mr. Moretti," I whispered.

"You haven't eaten all day, Grace," he said, his voice dropping into a gentle command. "And my name is Alessandro. We are past the formalities."

I looked at the food, then up at him. "Why are you doing this? You don't know me. I’m just a housekeeper. People in your business... they eliminate risks. I'm a massive risk."

Alessandro pulled a leather chair from the corner of the room and dragged it over, sitting opposite me. He looked at Lily sleeping peacefully on the bed, then back at me.

"Twenty years ago," Alessandro spoke softly, his voice echoing with old, deep pain, "my father was the head of the Moretti family. He had a trusted lieutenant. A man he considered a brother. That man was bribed by a rival family."

My breath hitched in my throat.

"I was eight years old," Alessandro continued, his eyes darkening. "I watched that traitor walk into our home and execute my mother and my younger sister while my father was away. I survived because my mother hid me inside a laundry chute."

He looked into my eyes, raw vulnerability flashing behind his hard exterior. "When I saw Carlo draw his weapon in the garden today... when I saw you throw yourself in front of your daughter... I didn't see a housekeeper, Grace. I saw my mother. And I swore on my family's grave that I would never stand by and watch an innocent mother and child be slaughtered again."

Tears trickled down my cheeks. The ruthless monster the media painted Alessandro Moretti to be didn't exist in this room. Sitting in front of me was a man who carried the heavy, bleeding scars of a boyhood tragedy—a man who lived in a cage of his own power.

"I'm so sorry, Alessandro," I whispered softly.

"Don't be," he said quietly. "Carlo is paying for his treason. And tonight, Marco is tracking down your ex-husband."

"Marcus?" I asked, a surge of anger tightening my chest. "Where is he?"

"Hiding in an illegal gambling den in Queens," Alessandro replied coldly. "He sold the Russians your apartment address and your daily routine to clear his debt. He gave them your life to save his own skin."

I buried my face in my hands, a dry sob escaping my throat. "How could he? He’s her father!"

Alessandro stood up, stepping close to the bed. He reached out, his massive, warm hand gently resting on my shoulder. The touch sent a strange, electric warmth coursing through my veins, steadying my trembling frame.

"A real man protects his blood, Grace," Alessandro said, his tone hard as iron. "Marcus Miller is not a man. He’s a parasite. And I promise you, by tomorrow morning, he will never be able to harm you or Lily again."

Suddenly, a sharp alarm tone chimed from the security console near the door.

Alessandro’s head snapped toward the wall monitor. The live camera feed from the front gate flickered violently, showing a black armored van ramming through the heavy iron gates of the estate.

TRRRRRT! TRRRRRT!

The high-pitched screech of the perimeter breach siren echoed through the mansion walls.

"Stay here!" Alessandro barked, reaching into a concealed drawer in the nightstand and pulling out a heavy tactical handgun.

"Alessandro!" I cried out in terror, jumping to my feet.

He hit a button on the wall. A heavy steel security shutter slammed down over the bedroom window, locking us in absolute darkness, illuminated only by the red emergency LEDs along the floor.

"Lock the door from the inside, Grace!" Alessandro commanded, stepping toward the doorway. "If anyone other than me or Marco tries to open this door, shoot them!"

He racked the slide of his pistol, his eyes blazing with lethal ferocity, and vanished into the echoing darkness of the corridor.
