Chapter 19

Chapter 19: The Vanguard
The sterile smell of the hospital room was a stark contrast to the ocean breeze of the resort.
Charlotte sat in a hard plastic chair beside the hospital bed. The steady, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.
Owen Mercer lay in the bed, his head bandaged, his left arm wrapped in a heavy cast. He looked frail, but when his eyes fluttered open and focused on the woman sitting beside him, a spark of life returned to them.
"Charlotte," he rasped, his throat dry.
She immediately poured a cup of water, gently helping him take a sip.
"You shouldn't be here," Owen whispered, leaning back against the pillows. "You have a company to run."
"I have time," Charlotte smiled, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. She reached out and gently took his good hand. "It's done, Owen. Graham is in federal custody. The board unanimously voted to confirm me as CEO. The merger is dead."
Owen closed his eyes, a profound sigh of relief escaping his chest. The heavy burden he had carried since Vivian's death was finally lifted.
"Your mother..." Owen swallowed hard. "She would be so incredibly proud of the woman you became today."
"I couldn't have done it without you," Charlotte said, her voice thick with emotion. "You protected me. You protected her legacy. When you're healed, there's a new office waiting for you. Executive Vice President of Operations."

Owen chuckled softly, wincing slightly at the pain in his ribs. "I'm an old wrench-turner, Charlotte. I belong in the boiler room, not the boardroom."
"You belong wherever I need my most trusted general," Charlotte insisted, squeezing his hand. "Rest now. We won."
