Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Sanctum

It was past midnight when Charlotte finally took the private elevator to the executive penthouse.

The heavy mahogany doors to Vivian Vale’s office had been locked since the day of her funeral. Graham had tried to have them breached, but Vivian had installed military-grade biometric deadbolts. They responded to two things: Vivian's fingerprints, or the manual override of the original gold master key.

Charlotte stood before the doors. The hallway was dead silent. She inserted the heavy gold key into the subtle, brass-lined keyhole beneath the electronic pad. She turned it.

A heavy, mechanical clack echoed in the silence. The deadbolts retracted.

Charlotte pushed the doors open.

The air inside was stale, preserving the faint, lingering scent of her mother's signature sandalwood perfume. The office was vast, lined with books, architectural blueprints of the Solmere empire, and a massive, commanding desk overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Charlotte walked straight to the oil painting of the resort’s founding on the far wall. She swung the heavy frame aside, revealing the steel face of the wall safe.

Your birthday, backwards.

Her fingers flew across the keypad. 0-1-2-1-9-9.

The safe hissed open. Inside lay a single, thick leather-bound ledger, and a sealed envelope with her name written in Vivian’s sharp, elegant cursive. Charlotte broke the wax seal with a trembling thumb and unfolded the heavy parchment.

Charlotte,

If you are reading this, it means Graham has shown his true face, and you have found the strength to show yours. He believes this empire runs on money. He is wrong. It runs on loyalty. The ledger contains proof of his shadow accounts. He has been bleeding the Beverly Hills property dry to artificially deflate our stock, preparing to sell us for parts to Sterling Corp. Burn his ambitions to the ground. This desk is yours now. Do not apologize for sitting behind it.

May you like

Love, Mom.

Charlotte held the letter to her chest, closing her eyes. When she opened them, the bruised, exhausted woman was gone. The CEO had arrived.
