Chapter 5 - Poison in the Well

The elimination of Marcus was swift, but the true snake was still lurking in the dark. Dominic Moretti, realizing his ambush had failed when Marcus didn't report back, switched to a far more insidious tactic.
Three days after the incident, Leo suddenly developed a soaring fever. His feeding stopped entirely, his body breaking out in a dangerous red rash. Hannah was frantic, pacing the nursery with the crying baby in her arms, her own eyes red from crying.
Dr. Halloran rushed back to the estate, running immediate blood panels. The results were terrifying: Leo had ingested a mild, slow-acting synthetic neurotoxin—one designed to cause organ failure in infants within forty-eight hours.
“How is this possible?!” I roared in my study, slamming my fist through a glass cabinet. “This house is a fortress! Every piece of food, every drop of water is tested!”
“It wasn't in his food, Lorenzo,” Dr. Halloran said, his voice trembling as he looked at the lab sheet. “The toxin was found in Hannah’s blood stream. A very low dose—harmless to an adult, but fatal to a premature infant through breast milk.”
My heart stopped. I turned and stormed into Hannah’s quarters. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, pale, weak, holding an ice pack to her head, unaware that she was carrying poison inside her own body.
Vance immediately began a sweep of her private quarters. Within ten minutes, he found the culprit: a tube of prescription organic nipple cream that had been supplied by the local high-end pharmacy two days ago. Someone had intercepted the delivery and laced the cream with the neurotoxin, knowing Hannah would apply it before feeding Leo.
Hannah collapsed onto the floor, clutching her head in agony, not from the poison, but from the sheer horror of what had happened. “I poisoned him...” she sobbed uncontrollably, digging her nails into the rug. “Oh God... I poisoned him! I almost killed him!”

I knelt beside her, pulling her violently against my chest, holding her tight as she shook. “It wasn't you,” I snarled into her hair, my eyes burning with pure, unadulterated fury. “It was Moretti. He used your love for my son against you.”
I looked up at Vance. “Get the antidote for Leo immediately. Then mobilize every soldier we have. Tonight, we wipe the Moretti family off the map.”
