Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed, and the Rossi mansion breathed with a life it hadn't known since Sophia’s death. Leo was thriving, gaining weight rapidly, his bright blue eyes tracking Hannah whenever she walked into the room. A deep, silent bond had formed between the young maid and the billionaire’s heir.
And between Hannah and me, an unwritten understanding grew. We were two broken souls holding a fragile miracle together. I found myself returning home from my Manhattan office earlier every day, not just to see my son, but to sit in the nursery while Hannah read to him, listening to the soft, comforting cadence of her voice.
However, peace in my world is always short-lived.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, my head of security, Vance, walked into my private study and slammed a surveillance folder onto my desk. “We have a problem, Boss.”
I opened the folder. Inside were photographs of Hannah leaving her daughter’s cemetery earlier that afternoon. Standing near the iron gates of the cemetery, watching her through binoculars, was a man with a scarred face. Marcus Vance—her abusive ex-boyfriend.
“He tracked her,” Vance reported grimly. “He knows she’s living at the estate now. But it gets worse. Look at the second set of photos.”
I flipped the page. My blood ran cold.
Marcus wasn't alone. He was sitting inside a tinted sedan in an alleyway, taking an envelope of cash from a man I recognized instantly: Dominic Moretti.
Moretti was the rival mob boss who had orchestrated the car bombing that killed my wife. I had destroyed his drug networks, crippled his illegal shipping docks, and forced him into hiding. Now, Moretti had found Hannah—and he realized that the key to destroying Lorenzo Rossi wasn't a bomb, but the woman keeping my son alive.

“Moretti paid Marcus fifty thousand dollars for information on the estate’s security shift changes,” Vance said softly. “They’re planning something, Boss.”
I closed the folder, my knuckles white as I gripped the edge of the desk. “Marcus thinks he’s getting revenge on his ex-girlfriend. Moretti thinks he’s going to take my son.” I looked up at Vance, my eyes filled with murder. “Set the trap. Let Marcus think he succeeded. I want them both.”
