Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Idol

The reaction was instantaneous, violent chaos.
Rachel Sterling turned and slapped Logan across the face with enough force to echo through the altar, screaming hysterical curses at him before her father dragged her away toward the side exit.
The three hundred elite guests erupted into shouts of rage and disbelief. Outside the cathedral, the massive television screens displayed the live broadcast, causing the thousands of fans gathered on Fifth Avenue to gasp in horror before their chants turned into furious roars of disgust.
Logan staggered backward against the altar table, knocking over two silver chalices. “It’s a lie! It’s a fake AI audio clip! Julian did this! Julian forged it!”
“It’s not a fake, Logan,” Ryan’s voice spoke up from the second row.
Ryan stood up, tears streaming down his face, pulling the micro-wire from his suit jacket. “I gave the District Attorney the offshore account transfer receipts an hour ago, Logan. It’s over. We’re both going to jail.”
The two plainclothes detectives stepped up to the altar.
“Logan Vance,” the lead detective announced, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit severe bodily harm, grand larceny, and corporate fraud.”
Logan tried to run toward the vestry door, but the second officer grabbed him by the arms, slamming him down against the cold marble steps of the altar.
The news cameras zoomed in, capturing every millisecond of the glorious downfall. Logan Vance—the golden pop prince, the heartthrob of millions—was pinned to the ground in his Tom Ford tuxedo, weeping pathetically, his face pressed against the stone as the steel cuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
As they hauled him to his feet, Logan looked at Maya. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, filled with a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy.
“Maya... please!” Logan sobbed, saliva dripping from his lip. “I loved you! I was confused! Please... tell them not to do this! You can have the money! You can have the songs! Just save me!”
Maya walked slowly up to him. She stood inches away from his face, looking down at the man she had wasted five years of her life loving.
She reached out, gently touching the right side of her flawless, unscarred cheek.

“You asked who would ever want me after this, Logan,” Maya whispered softly, her voice carrying only to his ears. “The answer is... anyone I want. But no one will ever want you again.”
She turned her back on him as the police dragged him away down the central aisle, surrounded by the flashing strobes of dozens of news cameras immortalizing his ruin.
