Chapter 4 - The Funeral of Maya Lin

At 4:00 AM, the official news broke across every global media platform.

“BREAKING: Maya Lin, Fiancée of Pop Superstar Logan Vance, Succumbs to Injuries Following Tragic Acid Attack in Soho.”

I sat in the back of an dark, armored Mercedes SUV driving north along the Hudson River, watching the news alerts flood my burner phone screen.

The press release issued by Logan’s publicist was a masterpiece of manipulative performance art:

“It is with an unimaginably heavy heart that we announce the passing of Maya Lin. Logan Vance is utterly devastated by this incomprehensible tragedy. Out of respect for Maya’s memory, and to honor her final wishes for Logan to find peace and family, the private ceremony scheduled for this weekend between Logan Vance and Rachel Sterling will proceed as an act of memorial and sacred union.”

I let out a soft, bitter laugh. To honor her final wishes. He couldn't even let me "die" without using my ghost to validate his illegal marriage to a billionaire heiress.

beside me, Julian closed his laptop. “The media is eating it up. Stock prices for Sterling Media Group jumped twelve percent this morning following the announcement of the merger wedding.”

“And the attacker?” I asked, adjusting the light silk scarf covering the right side of my face.

“NYPD arrested a man named Marcus Flint three hours ago in an abandoned motel outside Atlantic City,” Julian replied smoothly. “Found fifty thousand dollars in unmarked cash in his duffel bag. But here’s the beauty of it, Maya: Flint didn't keep his mouth shut. The moment the detectives told him he was being charged with first-degree murder because the victim died, he panicked.”

I turned my head toward Julian sharply. “Did he confess?”

“He sang like a canary,” Julian said, a cold glint of satisfaction in his eyes. “He gave up the name of the middleman—a low-level fixer who works directly for Logan’s manager, Ryan. The NYPD internal affairs division is keeping the confession under strict embargo because I personally contacted the District Attorney. We told them to wait until Saturday morning to make the arrests.”

“Why Saturday?”

“Because on Saturday at 11:00 AM, Logan Vance will be standing at the altar of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, surrounded by eighty international news cameras, three hundred billionaire investors, and the entire board of Sterling Media Group,” Julian explained, leaning back against the leather seat. “If we arrest him now, his high-priced corporate lawyers will handle it behind closed doors with quiet bail hearings. But if we strike at the altar? He will be handcuffed in front of forty million live-stream viewers worldwide.”

I turned my gaze back toward the rain-slicked window, watching the city lights fade into the dark forests of upstate New York.

For five years, I had shrunk myself to make Logan Vance look like a giant. I had stayed in the shadows, writing his lyrics, managing his volatile tempers, forgiving his endless subtle betrayals, believing that true love required sacrifice.

I touched the smooth, cold surface of the stem-cell medical dressing on my cheek.

The sacrifice was over. Now came the execution.
