Chapter 8 - The Altar of Judgment

The organ music reached its crescendo as Rachel Sterling arrived at the foot of the altar. Her father handed her hand to Logan, who took it with a practiced, romantic flourish.
The Archbishop stepped forward, opening his heavy leather-bound book.
“Dearly beloved,” the Archbishop’s voice echoed through the cathedral’s sound system, broadcast live to forty million homes worldwide, “we are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony...”
Logan stared into Rachel’s eyes, whispering quietly, “We did it.”
“...A union born out of resilience, sorrow, and solemn honor,” the Archbishop continued. “If any person here can show just cause why these two may not lawfully be joined together, let them speak now, or forever hold their peace.”
A quiet beat passed. The Archbishop prepared to turn the page.
“I have cause,” a clear, powerful voice rang out from the back of the cathedral.
The voice didn't just carry—it cut through the silent cathedral like a thunderclap.
Every single head in three hundred pews turned simultaneously. The eight news cameras positioned along the balcony swung around, focusing instantly on the main aisle.
Logan froze. His face went instantly pale, his eyes wide with incomprehensible terror.
Walking down the center aisle, her silver dress sweeping smoothly across the red carpet, was Maya Lin.
Gasps tore through the cathedral. Several guests stood up, shouting in shock.
“Maya?!” Rachel shrieked, backing away from Logan as if she had seen a ghost. “What... what is this?! You’re dead!”
Logan’s hands began to shake violently. “No... no, this isn't possible... you were... you were burned... you died in the hospital!”
Maya stopped ten feet from the altar. She looked at Logan, her expression cold, calm, and filled with supreme authority.
“I didn't die, Logan,” Maya said, her voice amplified through the lapel microphone Julian had attached to her gown, echoing clearly through every television broadcast in the country. “I just stayed awake long enough to hear you tell your manager how you paid fifty thousand dollars to have acid thrown in my face so you could steal my music and marry Rachel Sterling.”
The entire cathedral went deathly quiet.
“What?!” Rachel’s father roared, stepping forward. “What madness is this?!”
Julian Vance stepped out from the side aisle, holding a sleek black electronic control tablet. He tapped the screen once.
Instantly, the four massive digital video screens set up throughout the cathedral—originally intended to display romantic slide-shows of Logan and Rachel—flickered and changed.

The hospital room audio recording began to play at maximum volume, Logan’s own voice booming through the cathedral stone walls:
“Because if I dumped her... the press would have hunted Rachel down. I needed Maya to be physically unable to show up. I needed the world to believe I was the devastated, heartbroken groom... After something like this, who else do you think would ever want to leave me?”
