Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Strike

The exposure of Patrick Callahan’s decades-old crimes shattered the board of Callahan Maritime. Within thirty minutes, federal agents from the IRS Criminal Division and NYPD detectives swarmed the 50th floor, placing Patrick and his two legal co-conspirators in heavy steel handcuffs.

As Patrick was being led past the row of flashing news cameras in the building lobby, he stopped, turning his bitter, hateful eyes toward Grant and Claire.

“You think you’ve won, Grant?” Patrick spat, a grotesque, desperate laugh escaping his throat. “You think you can play the savior? You’re a Callahan! Your hands are just as dirty as mine! You live in a palace built on blood!”

Grant stood beside Claire, his arm wrapped securely around her waist, completely unaffected by the venom. “My father built a house out of stone and dark secrets, Patrick,” Grant replied coldly. “I’m tearing it down and building something clean. Starting today.”

As the police cruisers drove away into the torrential rain, Grant turned to Claire. For the first time in three years, the shadow of fear that had constantly hung over her eyes was gone. She looked at him with profound gratitude, her hand resting over his heart.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice choking with emotion. “You gave my parents their justice.”

“We’re not done yet,” Grant said softly, leaning down to look into her eyes. “We still have to go home to Lily.”

However, while Patrick was locked in a federal holding cell, the dying embers of his criminal network were far from extinguished. Patrick’s eldest son, Julian Callahan—a volatile, ruthless enforcer who managed the illegal shipping docks in New Jersey—learned of his father's arrest. Unlike his father, who operated through contracts and forged documents, Julian was a man of pure violence.

At 3:00 PM, while Grant was finalizing the emergency release of company funds to restore the corrupted employee childcare program, his phone buzzed with an urgent code-red text from his penthouse security team.

PENHOUSE SECURITY BREACH. CONSERVATORY ENTRANCE COMPROMISED. HEAVY FIRE.

Grant’s blood turned to liquid ice. Claire was at the penthouse with Lily, accompanied only by Mrs. Turner and two security guards.

Grant didn't wait for Owen or the police. He sprinted out of his office, drew his personal custom Kimber .45 pistol from his desk safe, and took the express elevator directly to the underground garage.

“Owen!” Grant roared into his earpiece as he slammed his foot down on the accelerator of his twin-turbo V8 SUV, tearing out into Manhattan traffic. “Julian is at the penthouse! Mobilize the tactical team now!”
