Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Penthouse

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the grand conservatory of Grant Callahan’s penthouse.
Julian Callahan walked through the destroyed glass doors, holding a suppressed machine pistol, flanked by three heavily armed men in black tactical gear. The two penthouse guards lay unconscious near the foyer, having been taken down by flashbang grenades.
Mrs. Turner was cowering behind the marble kitchen island, holding a butcher knife with shaking hands.
In the master suite guest wing, Claire had slammed the heavy reinforced oak door shut, throwing the double deadbolts into place. She sat in the corner of the walk-in closet, holding eight-month-old Lily tightly against her chest. Lily was crying, terrified by the loud explosions and gunshots echoing through the home.
“Shh, baby... shh, Mommy’s here,” Claire whispered through her tears, rocking the baby back and forth. “Grant is coming. I know he’s coming.”
Heavy footsteps thudded down the hallway outside the master suite.
“Claire!” Julian’s rough, raspy voice shouted through the door. “Open the door, girl! You put my father in jail! You ruined my family’s money! You think Grant is gonna save you? He’s a businessman! I’m going to throw you and that bastard kid off this roof!”
Julian fired a volley of bullets into the door lock. The wood splintered, but the heavy steel core inside held firm. Julian cursed, motioning to one of his men. “Get the breaching charges! Blow the hinges!”
Suddenly, the private elevator doors at the end of the main hallway opened with a soft chime.
Grant stepped out. He didn't take cover. He didn't call out a warning.
A single bullet from Grant’s Kimber .45 tore through the neck of the first tactical gunman before he could raise his rifle. The second gunman turned, but Grant fired twice more, striking him centrally in the chest, dropping him instantly onto the marble floor.
Julian spun around, his eyes wild with rage, raising his machine pistol toward Grant. “You traitorous bastard!”
Grant dove behind a marble pillar just as a hail of bullets shredded the artwork and plaster walls behind him. Glass rained down like snow. Grant rolled out from behind the pillar, firing three rapid shots. One bullet struck Julian in the shoulder, knocking him backward against the wall.
Julian screamed in pain, dropping his weapon, blood soaking his tactical vest. He reached for a grenade attached to his chest harness, his eyes crazed with murder. “If I’m going down, I’m taking this whole damn penthouse with me!”
Before Julian’s thumb could pull the pin, Grant sprinted across the room, grabbed Julian by his collar, and smashed his head violently against the stone doorframe. Julian collapsed onto the floor, unconscious, his grip loosening on the unprimed grenade.
Silence returned to the penthouse, save for the soft sound of rain falling through the shattered conservatory glass.
Grant stood over the fallen men, his chest heaving, his gun held low. He didn't care about the destroyed artwork, the bullet holes in his walls, or the blood on his marble floor.
He walked directly to the master suite door, knocking softly three times—their private code.
“Claire,” Grant said, his voice trembling with an emotion he had never felt in his thirty-nine years of life. “It’s over. You’re safe.”

The deadbolt clicked open. The door swung wide.
Claire stood there, tears pouring down her face. When she saw Grant standing alive, covered in dust but unharmed, she didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her, kissing him fiercely as she held Lily between them. Grant wrapped his powerful arms around both of them, burying his face in Claire’s soft hair, holding the woman and child who had transformed his cold, empty world into something worth dying for.
