Chapter 9 - The Proposal at the Lake

Spring arrived in New York, bringing warm breezes, blooming cherry blossoms, and green grass to Central Park.
Grant bought a stunning, historic estate in Upstate New York overlooking a peaceful, crystal-clear lake—a place far away from the concrete noise and dark shadows of Manhattan. The estate was filled with gardens, wooden play sets, and rolling lawns where Lily, now over a year old and walking on sturdy little legs, loved to run.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Grant took Claire and Lily down to the wooden dock at the edge of the lake. Lily was wearing a bright yellow sundress, holding her stuffed bunny, happily splashing her feet near the water while Owen watched her from the lawn chairs nearby.
Grant led Claire to the edge of the dock, where the sun reflected off the golden water like millions of tiny diamonds. He took both of her hands in his, looking into her hazel eyes with a intensity that made her heart race.
“A year ago, Claire,” Grant began softly, his voice rich with emotion, “I was a man who lived in a stone cage. I thought money, power, and rules were the only things that kept me safe from the world. I thought I was content being alone.”
Claire smiled, her eyes glistening with tears. “And then a baby dropped a piece of brass at your feet.”
“And then a miracle walked into my hallway,” Grant corrected gently, pulling her closer. “You and Lily didn't just break my rules, Claire. You saved my life. You brought love, warmth, and meaning into a home that was dead without you.”
Grant slowly dropped down onto one knee on the wooden dock. He pulled a black velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a magnificent, flawless five-carat oval diamond ring set in polished platinum.
“Claire Whitmore,” Grant said, his voice thick with raw, unselfish love. “I don't want to spend another morning without seeing your face. I don't want to build a future where you aren't my wife, and Lily isn't my daughter. Will you marry me?”
Claire let out a sob of pure, unadulterated happiness, dropping to her knees beside him on the dock, throwing her arms around his neck.

“Yes!” she cried against his cheek, kissing him deeply as tears of joy spilled down her face. “Yes, Grant! A thousand times yes!”
Lily toddled over to them, babbling happily, throwing her little arms around both of their legs, joining in their tight hug. Grant lifted them both into his powerful arms, kissing his bride-to-be and his daughter under the warm spring sun, knowing that no amount of money could ever buy the paradise he held in his hands.
