Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

The autumn air in San Francisco was crisp and clear, carrying the salty tang of the Pacific Ocean as it swept across the bay.

I stood on the private balcony of my condo, looking out over the glittering skyline of the city. The dark chapter involving the Whitmore family was officially closed, sealed away in federal case files and forgotten courtrooms. The condo had been thoroughly cleaned, redecorated, and reclaimed—every trace of their unwanted presence scrubbed away and replaced by my own style, my own peace, and my own rules.

My phone buzzed on the patio table. I picked it up and saw a text message from Sarah Lin:

“Starting my new job in Seattle today, Claire. Thank you for having the courage to make the call that set us both free.”

I smiled, typing back a quick reply wishing her the absolute best, before locking the phone and slipping it into my pocket.

Behind me, the glass door slid open, and Marcus stepped out onto the balcony, carrying two glasses of chilled white wine. He handed one to me, clinking his glass gently against mine.

"To new beginnings," Marcus said softly, his eyes warm and bright.

"To new beginnings," I echoed, taking a sip as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

My condo was mine. My life was mine. And for the first time in a very long time, the future belonged entirely to me.
