Chapter 5 - The Corporate Fallout

The morning sun broke over the bay, casting a harsh, bright light across the police tape still fluttering outside the condo. By 9:00 AM, the news had already begun circulating through the tight-knit circles of San Francisco's elite business community.

I sat in my home office, a cup of black coffee steaming on the desk, reviewing the legal notices flashing across my computer screen. The moment the police report detailing Adrian's arrest and the basement investigation hit the public wire, the shockwaves were immediate.

Adrian's father, Charles Whitmore, was the managing partner of Whitmore & Associates Wealth Management. By noon, the board of directors had suspended him indefinitely, freezing all corporate accounts pending a federal audit into missing client funds—funds that investigators suspected had been funneled through the very shell companies used to hide Sarah Lin's assets.

My phone rang. It was Marcus, my corporate attorney and longtime friend.

"Claire, are you holding up?" Marcus asked, his voice laced with concern.

"I'm fine, Marcus, just tired," I replied, massaging my temples where the bruise from the plate was beginning to turn a deep, purplish blue. "Tell me you have good news."

"The best," Marcus said, a triumphant note in his voice. "Because you were the sole owner of this condo prior to the marriage, and because we have documented proof that Adrian and his family attempted to force fraudulent property transfers under duress, I've already filed an emergency motion for a restraining order and an expedited annulment based on fraud and physical abuse. Furthermore, your bank accounts have been fully secured with new encryption protocols. Not a single cent of your corporate revenue can be touched by Adrian or his parents."

"And the family?"

"They're scattering like rats," Marcus laughed dryly. "Eleanor has been locked out of her country club accounts because they were tied to Charles's frozen corporate portfolio. The relatives who were cheering for your living room furniture yesterday have all suddenly remembered they have pressing engagements out of state. Nobody wants to be associated with a criminal enterprise."

"Good," I said firmly. "Let them figure out how to pay their own bills for once."

"There's one more thing, Claire. Sergeant Vance called a few minutes ago. The search of the basement revealed encrypted backups of financial records belonging to Sarah Lin. It turns out she didn't leave the country. She left behind a trail that federal prosecutors are going to use to put both Charles and Adrian away for a very long time."

A wave of profound relief washed over me. Sarah would finally get justice, and so would I.
